Microsoft Automotive News | June 2021

Ein Auto auf einer digitalen Straße

The automotive sector was one of several industries featured in a recent Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) study sponsored by Microsoft. The report consolidated data from a global survey of 800 senior business executives and senior-level government employees, spanning eight industries. We invite you to read the full report, as well as our automotive summary blog, which shares four ways digital innovation is moving the automotive industry forward from the pandemic:

  1. If digital leads in automotive, improved sustainability follows. Forty-one percent of automotive respondents say it’s the area where digital transformation in their industry could have the most significant positive impact.
  2. Software defines the next-generation vehicle—and the customer and employee experience. Companies are now hiring software engineers at a higher rate than even mechanical engineers.
  3. Skilling from within creates an opportunity for automotive. The automotive industry is constantly positioning and recruiting for top talent and finding new ways to reskill its existing workforce.
  4. Digital investment translates to greater agility, increased momentum, and a high return.

Last month, we kicked off the April 22-May 20 Automotive News Congress Conversations as a co-lead sponsor along with PwC. The webinars feature automotive industry leaders sharing their insights on the impacts of globalism, electrification, and consumerism in today’s world – and the new business opportunities they create. The first webinar featured Ford CEO Jim Farley and Carvana CEO Ernie Garcia, who discussed the evolution of consumers’ digital experience use cases. We also had the opportunity to discuss how Microsoft is helping our customers deliver superior customer experiences and drive innovation with intelligent cloud and edge solutions, AI, quantum computing, and mixed reality. Subsequent sessions covered electrification, software 2.0, supply chain resilience, and the evolving mobility ecosystem. We encourage you to register and check out the on-demand sessions.
As we talk about innovation, it was great to see automotive customers highlighted in Microsoft EVP Judson Althoff’s recent blog titled, “How Microsoft cloud technology and co-innovation approach are driving business value for customers across industry.” While the blog touches on many sectors, Judson mentioned automotive companies like BMW, GM, Cruise, and Volkswagen, who see Microsoft as a trusted partner. It’s also exciting to see continued innovation with other companies. For example, Bosch forges ahead in the software-defined vehicles space, and Amadeus pursues unique customer experiences in the travel industry. These companies and others remain focused on developing capabilities that increase safety, reduce environmental impact, and increase productivity while on the go. We’re excited to be part of their journey.
It’s an exciting time for our industry. Thank you for the opportunity to partner with you and help bring your next-generation innovations to fruition!

Best regards,
Sanjay Ravi
