University of Rochester Medical Center improves the radiology experience with PowerScribe One and Dragon Copilot

University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) radiologists face rising imaging volumes, faster turnaround expectations, and growing cognitive load.

URMC chose PowerScribe One to help radiologists with workflow-integrated AI. Currently in preview with Dragon Copilot, a companion to PowerScribe One, URMC is exploring how additional cloud and AI capabilities can shape the future of reporting.

With PowerScribe One, radiologists can benefit from cloud speech designed to support more accurate, efficient report dictation. Built-in features like Smart Impression use generative AI to draft impressions for review in each radiologist’s style—helping save time and improve quality.

For University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), moving to the cloud with PowerScribe One was essential to access advanced AI capabilities that fit seamlessly into radiologists’ workflows, while improving efficiency and provider satisfaction at a time of growing workload and limited resources. The adoption of Smart Impression has been particularly successful because it can deliver fast, accurate, and personalized draft impressions. “This [Smart Impression] is one of the key reasons to move to the cloud to PowerScribe One. If you're not in the cloud or not in PowerScribe One, you can't take advantage of a lot of these tools,” says Stacie Barnard, CIIP, CNMT, Director, Integrated Clinical Systems at University of Rochester Medical Center.

Additionally, URMC is currently in preview with Dragon Copilot, which works with PowerScribe One to deliver first‑ and third‑party AI apps and agents. As a companion to PowerScribe One, Dragon Copilot is designed to optimize workflows with intelligent automation and real‑time summarization. Within Dragon Copilot, URMC is exploring capabilities such as prior report summarization, which distills relevant prior reports and associated metadata into concise statements to provide essential context for radiologists as they interpret current studies. “I'd love to focus on prior report summary [in Dragon Copilot]. It works amazingly...it provides a great interface for seeing so much about the patient you otherwise might not see,” says Sean Cleary, MD, Vice Chair of Informatics for Imaging Sciences at University of Rochester Medical Center. Teams at URMC are optimistic and excited about how Dragon Copilot will continue to evolve and extend AI capabilities within the reporting workflow.
