The year is 1501. England, vulnerable to foreign invasion and with a near empty treasury, is placing its hopes on a union with the rich nation of Spain, through the marriage of the Spanish Princess, Catherine of Aragon to the English Crown Prince Arthur. Catherine arrives in England, supported by her retinue including her noble-born ladies-in-waiting Rosa and Lina, to find that Arthur is not the romantic and self-assured man he appeared to be in his letters. After clashing with the King and the King's mother, Catherine is summoned for an audience with Queen Elizabeth (Lizzie) where she learns of the grave price paid to ensure her marriage - executions orchestrated by Lizzie and Catherine's mother, Queen Isabella of Spain, to remove a potential threat to Arthur and Catherine's future reign. Plagued with doubts, Catherine follows through with her marriage to Arthur.

Catherine has taken the first step to fulfilling her destiny by marrying the heir to the English throne, but the newlyweds face difficulty consummating their marriage, complicated further by the interference of Arthur's jealous younger brother Harry. Following Arthur's untimely death, Catherine is determined to secure her place in court and has to put her personal grief aside to execute the political maneuver of a lifetime. Margaret Beaufort, concerned for the stability of the Tudor reign, is suspicious of Catherine, and urges Meg Tudor to marry into Scotland's royal family. After sharing her plan with a concerned Lina, Catherine tells Prince Harry that her marriage to Arthur was unconsummated. She says the same to Arthur's guardian Maggie who is unconvinced and conflicted over whether or not to support Catherine's claim. An infatuated Harry announces his intent to marry Catherine, resurrecting the promise of peace between Spain and England. Meanwhile, the pregnant queen Lizzie has a harrowing labor, leaving her weakened and with a troubling premonition about the future of the Tudor family line.

Margaret Beaufort, running the country while King Henry is grieving, is incensed to learn that he sanctioned Harry and Catherine's unorthodox engagement, and banishes the Spanish princess from the court. As Catherine is forced to find new lodgings, Meg leaves for Scotland, feeling uneasy about her arranged marriage to ‘old' King James. A troubled Maggie pleads in vain for Henry's forgiveness, wracked with guilt that she never made peace with Lizzie. Public unrest and dissent sweeps the country, causing concern for the Tudors. Lina meanwhile reluctantly spurns Oviedo's advances, feeling duty bound to fulfill the expectation that she will marry a wealthy English nobleman and Tudor loyalist. Rosa nonetheless continues her affair with Edward Stafford. Catherine makes her intentions to marry Harry known to her mother and asks her to send her dowry. However, to her and Harry's shock, Henry emerges from mourning and announces that he intends to honor his wife's dying wish, throwing Catherine's plans into disarray.

Despite the King's return, Margaret continues to exert her influence and control over the Tudor court and England. The mysterious pretender to the throne raising troops abroad has been identified as Edmund de la Pool, the last York heir. The Tudors must be ready with an army.

Catherine has pulled off a stunning coup and the throne of England is within her sights, but she still needs the remains of her dowry to be paid by her mother, Queen Isabella. Joanna and her husband Philip's ship is blown off course and they arrive in London - where Catherine is summoned to court to meet them. Catherine is filled with grief for her mother and uncertainty in the knowledge that her dowry - and future - now lie in her sister's hands. Lina and Oviedo have some exciting news, but Lina's attention is diverted elsewhere as Rosa must face the unthinkable. Maggie is living a quiet life away from court when tragedy strikes.

The whole country is suffering as the Tudor Crown raises taxes to finance an army against a possible foreign invasion. Maggie is destitute since the death of her husband and is forced to throw herself at the mercy of relatives, even when it's revealed that her cousins are involved in the York rebellion and could drive her back into the political games she abhors. Meanwhile Catherine finds herself without a place at court and struggling to pay rent. Rosa has decided to return to Spain with the departing Spanish ambassador, leaving Catherine with only Lina to support her. Catherine's attempts to meet Harry are thwarted at every turn and she is devastated to discover that he has left court to marry her niece, due to the machinations of her sister, Joanna. Determined to stay in England and fulfil her destiny, a change in circumstances encourages Catherine to put herself forward as the new Spanish Ambassador. Maggie and her children are captured by Tudor guards.

She writes to Harry instructing him to return home immediately. Maggie and her children, imprisoned in the Tower of London, await their fate. Oviedo discovers the cause of unrest and rushes to tell Catherine and Lina, putting himself in mortal danger with Margaret Beaufort. Catherine risks everything to find Harry and to discover if he still loves her.
