When I think about all the courtrooms I\u2019ve seen, they\u2019re more or less the same as they were 200 years ago, except for the addition of computers and monitors.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559738&quot;:225,&quot;335559739&quot;:225,&quot;335559740&quot;:336}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Court systems around the world have traditionally run on paper-based processes \u2013 and the vast majority still do \u2013 yet that\u2019s beginning to change. Judicial systems in the\u202f<a href=\"http:\/\/az370354.vo.msecnd.net\/enterprise\/MSFT_PSNS_Digital_Justice_Article_Final_Aug_12.pdf\">United Kingdom generated a million pages of documents a day<\/a>\u202fbefore moving to a Microsoft cloud-based digital justice platform. In addition to significant cost savings in terms of producing, transporting and storing large quantities of paper, the best outcome of going digital is that the data becomes easily accessible, free from paper silos, and available for analysis and interrogation to find relevant judicial hearings and decisions, case law, legal trends and more. After just 12 months, the UK\u2019s digital justice platform has reduced the number of paper documents from more than 18 million, which were related to 100,000-plus cases involving 18,500 registered users. In addition to moving from paper to a digital environment, courts also are innovating with other modern technologies:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW7392771\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559738&quot;:225,&quot;335559739&quot;:225,&quot;335559740&quot;:336}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3TxNhkEjy38\">Courthouses in Portugal have check-in kiosks<\/a>\u202fenabling all parties associated with a case to use their IDs to alert court administrators of their arrival.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Technology is also improving the transparency and efficiency of scheduling courtrooms so that witnesses, victims, suspects, lawyers and judges can see when and where they\u2019re needed instead of having to wait for a courtroom to become available.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Remote hearings, trials and testimony, made possible by our secure\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skype.com\/en\/business\/skype-for-business\/\">Skype for Business<\/a>, are making the physical location of courthouses less important. This technology is especially useful to:<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Enable a panel of judges to hear cases virtually<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Avoid the expense and danger of transporting violent defendants from jail<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"2\">Record a victim\u2019s statement once and then reuse that video for any following hearings so the victim doesn\u2019t have to keep reliving the event.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"1\">The Supreme Court of Buenos Aires upgraded to the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/windows\/default.aspx\">Windows 10<\/a>\u202foperating system for\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.microsoft.com\/en-us\/customer-story\/industries\/government\/public-safety\/argentina-court-upgrades-operation-system-for-security-manageability-performance\/\">better security, manageability, performance and cost reduction<\/a>. The court is also\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/customers.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/story\/argentine-supreme-court-provides-faster-digitized-service-to-citizens-with-cloud-media-portal\">processing cases more quickly through a customised media portal<\/a>\u202fbuilt on\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/?b=17.05\">Microsoft Azure<\/a>, enabling citizens to access cases that have been registered electronically and view video recordings through an integration with\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/services\/media-services\/\">Azure Media Services<\/a>.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"8\" data-aria-level=\"1\">The State Court of Justice of Sao Paulo has undertaken\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.microsoft.com\/en-us\/customer-story\/industries\/government\/public-safety\/state-court-of-justice-of-sao-paulos-digital-transformation-serves-citizens-up-to-70-faster\/\">a digital transformation that serves citizens up to 70% faster<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 with the initial 2.5 million digitised processes saving 850,000 working hours or nearly 100 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cybersecurity: the foundation of Microsoft court solutions<\/h2>\n<p>Court IT systems and legal records need to be protected from cyber-attacks just like court buildings, staff, lawyers, case participants and visitors need physical protection.
