The ribbon has been replaced with a trim <strong>command bar<\/strong>, which provides intelligent commands relevant to the tasks at hand. If your organization has customized the ribbon with buttons that map to critical business functionality in your enterprise, those buttons will appear in the command bar as well. With this update, each new Office 365 group now gets a full modern document library, replacing the former \u201cFiles\u201d page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important documents easily highlighted<\/strong>\u2014Click <strong>Pin to top <\/strong>to add documents \u201cabove the fold\u201d in any onscreen view.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Copy and move files from the command bar<\/strong>\u2014Copying isn\u2019t new, but the copy and move gestures are intelligent about displaying your information architecture and letting you create new folders on the fly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-227918\" src=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-nz\/microsoft-365\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2016\/06\/Modern-document-libraries-in-SharePoint-2b-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-nz\/microsoft-365\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2016\/06\/Modern-document-libraries-in-SharePoint-2b-1.png 478w, https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-nz\/microsoft-365\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2016\/06\/Modern-document-libraries-in-SharePoint-2b-1-277x300.png 277w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Copy files from SharePoint command bar.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Import files from other libraries<\/strong>\u2014You may not have to make as many copies any more. Document libraries are also intelligent about remembering other files you\u2019ve been using in <a href=\"https:\/\/products.office.com\/en-nz\/sharepoint\/collaboration\">SharePoint<\/a>. That\u2019s why you can import other files from other libraries as<strong> links<\/strong>,\u00a0without having to duplicate files between multiple sites. You still see thumbnails and metadata for native files. And SharePoint shows your list of most recent documents, so you don\u2019t have to cut and paste a link.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-227919\" src=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-nz\/microsoft-365\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2016\/06\/Modern-document-libraries-in-SharePoint-3b-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-nz\/microsoft-365\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2016\/06\/Modern-document-libraries-in-SharePoint-3b-1.png 757w, https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-nz\/microsoft-365\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2016\/06\/Modern-document-libraries-in-SharePoint-3b-1-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Create a link in modern document libraries.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Personalization<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Personalized views simplified<\/strong>\u2014The new document libraries let you group files directly in the main page without clicking to a separate admin screen. You can also click and drag to change the size of your columns, as well as sort, filter and group from any column header. To make the view available to everybody else in the library, just click <strong>Save View<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsive and accessible design<\/strong>\u2014Mobile browsers have the same features as the desktop, making SharePoint productive for every user\u2014whether they interact via mouse, keyboard, touch or screen reader.<\/p>\n<h3>Metadata<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Document metadata now available inline<\/strong>\u2014You can now edit metadata directly from the main view in the information panel. No more clicking into multiple screens to apply an update! If you\u2019re in a view that groups files by metadata, you can drag and drop files between groups to update the metadata. And if you miss something required, the document is no longer hidden behind enforced checkout\u2014you just receive a reminder to enter the data when you can.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One-stop shopping for everything about your documents<\/strong>\u2014Thanks to Office Online integration, you can navigate a complete document preview at the top of the information panel. The panel offers metadata, including the history of recent activity, updates to the file and who received a share to the file. You can also add more users or immediately stop all sharing. At the same time, there\u2019s a rich tradition of using content types, check-in\/check-out, versioning, records management and workflows in SharePoint. Modern document libraries inherit all of these.<\/p>\n<h3>Navigation<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Modern libraries come to Office 365 Groups<\/strong>\u2014To bring enhanced content management to group files, libraries belonging to an Office 365 group have a new header control at the top of the page.\u00a0Unlike the old control, which included links to the group\u2019s conversation, calendar and member management, the new control has a single link to the group\u2019s conversation, from which users can navigate to calendar and member management.<\/p>\n<h3>Getting started with modern document libraries<\/h3>\n<p>As we roll out modern libraries into production, we know it\u2019s important to focus on several key aspects of managing the overall user experience.<\/p>\n<p>Since usability requires manageability, we keep IT in control of the experience. You may be ready to adopt this across the board or you might want to stay in classic mode until you can prepare your users. We give you <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/article\/Switch-the-default-for-document-libraries-from-new-or-classic-66dac24b-4177-4775-bf50-3d267318caa9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">full control of using classic or modern looks<\/a> at the tenant, site collection and library level.<\/p>\n<p>When we bring modern document libraries into production later in June, it will become the new default for all libraries in most cases. However, we will add the tenant and administrative controls in advance of the actual library rollout, so if you choose to opt out, you can do so before users start seeing the new experience. We also included customization detection, so if we see certain features and customizations that don\u2019t work in the modern experience, we <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/article\/Differences-between-the-new-document-library-experience-and-classic-mode-30e1aab0-a5cc-4363-b7f2-09e2ae07d4dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">automatically drop back to classic mode<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And we\u2019ll keep classic mode running well into 2017 while users and developers adapt and adopt the new capabilities. You can join that conversation on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yammer.com\/itpronetwork\/#\/threads\/inGroup?type=in_group&amp;feedId=3903794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office 365 Network on Yammer<\/a> and weigh in on the improvements that will be part of our general release. Will new document libraries support customization?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong>\u00a0Yes, modern document libraries will continue to support declarative CustomActions that represent menu and command actions. Solutions that are currently deployed that make use of this mechanism should continue to work as before, with actions appearing in the new command surface in addition to the ribbon in classic mode. CustomActions that deploy script, JSLinks and additional web parts on the page are currently not supported. Environments that require these unsupported features should continue using classic mode for the time being.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q. How long will classic mode be supported?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong>\u00a0We recognize the need to test and prepare for any disruption to user experiences such as document libraries. We expect to run the two modes in parallel into 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q. Will these modern experiences come to on-premises servers?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong>\u00a0Bringing modern experiences to SharePoint Server 2016 is central to our vision and is very much a part of the roadmap. At this time, we have no information to share yet about how or how soon this will happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q. Which versions of Internet Explorer work best with modern libraries?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong>\u00a0SharePoint Online supports the latest version of the Safari, Firefox, Chrome and Edge browsers, along with Internet Explorer 10 and 11. Older versions of Internet Explorer are already <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/lifecycle#gp\/Microsoft-Internet-Explorer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">out of support<\/a> generally. Internet Explorer 8 and 9 were previously noted as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/products.office.com\/en-nz\/office-system-requirements\/#Browsers-section\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diminished experience<\/a>\u201d in SharePoint Online.
