2025’s Gartner® CFO & Finance Executive Conference featured sessions and hands-on product demonstrations from finance and operations providers covering growth strategies, cost management tools, and of course, AI in finance. I’ve had the pleasure of attending for a few years now, and what struck me this year was the excitement and enthusiasm for not just learning about but applying agents and generative AI to financial processes. Based on the conversations I had with customers at the event, here are the three things finance leaders should know about getting started with agents and AI.

Automate high-impact processes first

The journey to AI-powered finance doesn’t require a complete overhaul—it can start with targeted, high-impact steps that build momentum and deliver measurable value. Start with areas that are ripe for automation and deliver immediate impact to your team and bottom line. Financial close, account reconciliation, and supplier communications are ideal entry points using prebuilt agents available from Microsoft, like the Supplier Communications Agent in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, which can automatically respond to vendor emails, assess supply chain disruptions, and update purchase orders—helping to ensure continuity without manual intervention.

The breadth of agent possibility doesn’t stop with what’s available today as a prebuilt solution. Microsoft empowers finance professionals to build custom agents for ERP processes, applying automation and intelligence to critical processes, like the process at the heart of finance: record to report. Imagine the impact agents can have helping your team update tax strategies in a complex macroeconomic environment or surfacing real-time financial audits. Microsoft Copilot Studio agent builder provides a simple interface to quickly and easily build agents like the Financial Insights Agent, a tool designed internally for Microsoft to help finance professionals quickly surface and analyze key financial metrics. By using Azure OpenAI and semantic search, this agent allows users to ask natural language questions like “What’s my total operational expenditure (OPEX) as a percentage of expenses?” and receive instant, contextual answers. It can significantly reduce time spent on manual data retrieval and analysis while enhancing decision making with real-time insights. This agent exemplifies how AI can transform planning and analysis workflows, helping make finance teams more agile and strategic. Build your own agent here.

Establish a Center of Innovation to upskill your finance team

Create a dedicated team or initiative to explore, test, and scale AI use cases across finance. This “Center of Innovation” can serve as a hub for experimentation, governance, and best practices—helping ensure that AI adoption is intentional, secure, and aligned with business goals. Creating space for experimentation and testing means giving finance teams the freedom to test new tools, workflows, and ideas without the pressure of immediate perfection. It involves setting up low-risk environments, like sandboxes or pilot programs, where teams can trial AI agents, automate processes, and iterate quickly. This approach fosters a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement, allowing teams to scale what works and learn from what doesn’t.

Establishing a Center of Innovation was central to the growth and success of Microsoft’s own AI adoption. Microsoft Director of Modern Finance, Cory Hrncirik, joined the Microsoft session to share tangible examples of both AI adoption and the structures put in place to get us there.

Four takeaways from Microsoft’s own AI journey. Emphasis on culture, process, data and security and compliance.

As team members begin to shift from transactional to strategic roles, it’s imperative to equip your team with the skills required to work alongside AI. This could include training on prompt engineering for your function, data literacy, and how to manage and monitor AI agents.

Microsoft Copilot Studio offers a low-code environment where finance professionals can build and customize agents without needing deep technical expertise.

Work with IT to define your human-agent operating models to scale what works

As agents take on more operational tasks, CFOs must define how humans and AI will collaborate. This includes setting clear roles, responsibilities, and oversight mechanisms. Think of your team as a hybrid workforce—where agents handle the repetitive and analytical, and humans focus on judgment, strategy, and innovation. Due to the sensitive nature of financial material, early collaboration on security and permissions with IT will be crucial to implementation and driving outcomes.

AI and agents will transform retail in 2025

In 2025, the retail industry will be shaped by three transformative trends that will set the pace of growth and success in the evolving retail landscape:

  • delivering hyper-personalized customer experiences across physical and digital channels.
  • redefining convenience through innovative fulfillment and flexible shopping options.
  • embedding sustainability and ethical sourcing at the heart of business strategies.

At the Microsoft expo booth and our featured session, NRF attendees will learn how organizations can achieve these priorities by infusing AI across every business process and workflow—within both customer-facing and backend operations.

By integrating AI solutions like Microsoft Copilot and agents within ERP systems—the traditional foundation for managing critical business processes—retailers can scale the delivery of personalized customer experiences and flexible shopping options.

In addition, Microsoft will demonstrate at NRF how agents in Dynamics 365 ERP system solutions autonomously manage workflows and orchestrate processes across various domains, including customer journey, procurement, service and operations. These agents make data-driven decisions, optimize operations in real-time, and enhance productivity by automating routine tasks. This allows employees to concentrate on strategic priorities, thereby improving efficiency, cost savings, and relationships with customers and suppliers.

Delivering better customer experience

Dynamics 365 delivers AI capabilities that enable retailers to hyper-personalize customer experiences across physical and digital channels.

Transforming the shopper’s journey

With Dynamics 365, retailers can analyze vast amounts of customer data to better understand customer preferences and behaviors. This will enable them to deliver personalized shopping experience. Based on a 2025 CIO and Technology Executive survey by Gartner®, there will be an increase of retail respondents by 67% in 2025 to invest in in-store generative AI technology for associates and an increase of 60% to invest in in-store generative AI technology for customers.1

Retailers like Venchi are piloting the Personalized Shopping Agent in Dynamics 365 to enable their in-store associates to quickly surface product recommendations based on the customer’s preferences at checkout. With instant, tailored suggestions, it could not only enhance the overall shopping experience but also increase the basket value while improving brand loyalty.

Seamless omnichannel experience

Today’s customers expect a seamless shopping experience across all channels. Dynamics 365 AI-powered ERP systems integrate inventory and customer data from physical stores, online platforms, and mobile apps into a unified system. This integration ensures that customers receive consistent service and accurate information, regardless of how they choose to shop.

Lighting retailer Visual Comfort & Co. created a unified platform across 53 showrooms, a robust online store, manufacturing, and shipping with Dynamics 365 ERP system solutions; helping them to streamline operations and improve visibility across the complex supply chain. With real-time inventory visibility, their showroom associates can promise order availability and delivery accurately.

Turning fulfilment into a competitive advantage

With agents and Dynamics 365, retailers can redefine convenience through innovative fulfillment and flexible shopping options.

Proactively mitigate supply chain disruptions

It is paramount for retailers to prevent stock out and ensure on-time delivery to their customers to improve retention and loyalty. With frequent supply chain disruptions globally, retailers need to constantly stay in touch with their suppliers or contract manufacturers to proactively identify delays. The Supplier Communications Agent in Dynamics 365 autonomously processes supplier confirmations, flags potential delays, and suggests corrective actions to help ensure that customer orders are delivered on time.

With the agent automating these critical tasks, supply chain teams can focus on improving supplier relationships and contract negotiations resulting in reduced costs and more efficient procurement processes.

Flexible and fast fulfilment

Retailers like Build-A-Bear use Dynamics 365 to optimize fulfillment and offer a seamless shopping experience. They use stores as mini warehouses to fulfil orders faster, and with enhanced inventory visibility they can help ensure that their products are available when and where customers need them. They are able to offer flexible shopping options like Buy Online, Pick Up In Store (BOPIS) and Buy Online, Ship From Store (BOSFS) to their customers for more convenience. Additionally, the implementation of Dynamics 365 has led to a 28% reduction in processing days, significantly boosting warehouse productivity and enabling faster order fulfillment. These innovations allow Build-A-Bear to meet the evolving needs of today’s consumers, providing a more efficient, reliable, and flexible shopping experience.

Ethical sourcing and sustainability

In 2025, retailers are increasingly committed to embedding sustainability and ethical sourcing at the heart of business strategies. Sustainability features in Dynamics 365 solutions can help retailers comply with the latest standards and best practices, as well as drive positive changes for the business and the environment.

Enable recommerce and drive sustainable practices

AI-powered Dynamics 365 ERP systems help retailers to monitor and implement sustainable practices such as circularity. This enables them to run take-back programs for reselling, reusing, or recycling products to extend their lifecycle and reduce waste. Additionally, the order orchestration engine in Dynamics 365 helps retailers like ONLY, one of BESTSELLER’s largest fashion brands, to support sustainability goals by choosing fulfillment options that minimize carbon emissions while also helping to ensure orders are delivered on time and profitably. Along with the ability to buy online and return in-store, ONLY customers have the most environmentally friendly shipping options available.

Ethical supplier management

AI capabilities in Dynamics 365 ERP systems can help enhance ethical sourcing by managing vendor compliance, enforcing procurement policies, and supporting multisource strategies. One of our partners, Columbus, implemented Dynamics 365 ERP solutions at their customer Devold of Norway to help them deliver premium quality woolen products to their consumers. They now have a modernized cloud platform and are looking for ways to further improve traceability of their products so that their consumers know where the products come from. These solutions offer transparency and traceability for product origins and provides sustainability reporting to monitor and improve practices—ensuring your procurement aligns with ethical standards.

Future-proof your retail operations in 2025

AI-powered solutions for ERP and service systems are more than a technological upgrade. They are a strategic imperative for retailers aiming to deliver exceptional customer experiences, build lasting brand loyalty, and achieve sustainable profitability. In today’s business landscape, you need autonomous systems that can anticipate market changes, customer needs, or operational risks. The risk of clinging to legacy systems extends beyond inefficiency. It leads to missed opportunities, slower time-to-market, and the inability to remain competitive. Companies using AI-first processes through AI-powered solutions for ERP systems gain the foresight and agility necessary to not just react to changes but to lead through them.

In today’s rapidly evolving business environment, organizations must make fast decisions and embrace agile practices to reshape their operations while ensuring stability and continuity. Inflexible, outdated, and disconnected systems often pose risks that hinder their ability to respond promptly, seize new opportunities, and minimize disruption.

In the recent Microsoft Dynamics 365 Future of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Survey, we discovered that 93% of business leaders advocate the benefits of adopting flexible and integrated ERP systems. However, only a mere 39% expressed confidence in their current ERP system’s flexibility and integration capabilities to effectively leverage resources for business model transformation.1 This insight is crucial, particularly for organizations with legacy on-premises solutions that may struggle to meet new business demands.

Businesses relying on on-premises ERP and business management systems face challenges including:

  •  Slow responsiveness and delayed decision making due to disconnected data and lack of real-time information.
  • Greater vulnerability to security threats and challenges in meeting compliance due to a lack of advanced capabilities and resources.
  •  Difficulty competing with peers that embrace new AI-powered technologies dependent on cloud solutions.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss how the shift to cloud solutions empowers organizations to tackle challenges and thrive in a demanding era. We’ll also explore Microsoft’s Accelerate, Innovate, Move (AIM) program for a smooth cloud transition.

Make the cloud work for your business

Meet new demands with cloud innovation

The importance of business agility in today’s quickly shifting economy can’t be emphasized enough. With economic volatility and swiftly changing consumer preferences, 77% of business leaders acknowledge that these conditions are the most critical factors driving the need for agile business operations.2 Prioritizing agility enables organizations to respond effectively to evolving market conditions and gain a competitive advantage.

One customer that capitalized on the opportunity to meet new business challenges by moving from on-premises to the cloud was Ullman Dynamics, a world-leading provider of highly sophisticated suspension boat seats that serves organizations in more than 70 countries, including the United States Navy.

Serving customers is Ullman’s highest priority, but as the company grew, outdated technology kept it from meeting customer demands in key markets. With a recent surge in growth, experiencing up to a 50% annual increase, Ullman required warehouse expansion every two years. Concurrently, its products had to evolve to meet customer demands. This escalating scale and complexity strained its legacy business solution.

“Our traditional, on-premises ERP solution wasn’t able to handle the complexities of our modern business. We needed to consolidate our data into a more powerful system that could provide a full overview of our operations.”

Carl Magnus, Chief Executive Officer, Ullman Dynamics

In selecting a new business solution, Ullman had exacting criteria. It sought a solution that could scale and support its expanding global enterprise while also demanding exceptional flexibility.

By implementing cloud-based Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Ullman has enabled flexibility, efficiency, and access to valuable insights needed to improve quality service to its expanding client base.

“We’re number one in the world everywhere except for the United States. Now that Dynamics 365 Business Central has removed the barriers to growth, we are fully integrated into the US market, and Ullman Dynamics USA is poised for great success.”

Carl Magnus, Chief Executive Officer, Ullman Dynamics

Improve security when moving to the cloud

Another vital benefit that organizations gain by migrating to the cloud is the rapid innovation of security and compliance capabilities. The cloud helps protect business continuity, streamline IT operations, and navigate challenging compliance obligations as businesses grow.

Microsoft invests heavily in security measures and has the resources and expertise to implement and maintain higher levels of security than an individual organization could achieve on-premises. This is particularly important for small to medium-sized businesses, which often lack the resources to keep pace with evolving security threats.

A recent Microsoft study shows that 70% of organizations with under 500 employees are susceptible to human-operated ransomware attacks3, with these attacks becoming more sophisticated and harder to detect. They often target unmanaged devices, which lack proper security controls, and 80 to 90% of successful ransomware compromises originate from such devices.3 This poses a significant security risk for on-premises organizations that lack the advanced security available in the cloud.

Microsoft customers benefit from 135 million managed devices providing security and threat landscape insights and utilize advanced threat detection with 65 trillion signals synthesized daily using AI and data analytics.4 Moving to the cloud enables organizations to rapidly innovate and simplify the implementation of essential security practices, threat detection, and device management, granting them better protection.

While cloud technologies offer enhanced cybersecurity, they also help simplify compliance with regulatory standards, which is equally important. Managing complex certifications independently is challenging, with 65% of firms struggling with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance.5 Microsoft assists customers in assessing data protection controls and offers solutions for compliance, including GDPR, California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), International Organization for Standardization 27701 (ISO 27701), International Organization for Standardization 27001 (ISO 27001), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC), and more, enabling rapid and scalable compliance.

With Dynamics 365, organizations can confidently improve the security of their business systems when they move to the cloud. With access to advanced technology for scaling and managing security, as well as a network of thousands of specialized security experts, Microsoft provides tools and resources to ensure your migration goes as smoothly as possible.

Unlock AI and productivity with the cloud

One compelling reason for business leaders to transition from on-premises to the cloud is the potential for enhancing daily work and productivity with collaborative applications and AI. With 73% of business leaders emphasizing the importance of productivity improvements and 80% acknowledging the transformative role of AI, the cloud offers the means to establish hybrid work models, harness automation, and leverage artificial intelligence, resulting in a significant boost in overall productivity.

With the recent introduction of Microsoft Copilot, businesses can use transformative AI technology that offers new ways to enhance workplace efficiency, automate mundane tasks, and unlock creativity. At a time when two in three people say they struggle with having the time and energy to do their job, Copilot helps to free up capacity and enables employees to focus on their most meaningful work.7

While productivity can be enhanced with Copilot and AI, the combination of these tools with other cloud capabilities, such as collaborative applications, transforms the way work is conducted. By seamlessly connecting Microsoft 365 (Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and Excel) with Dynamics 365, businesses can swiftly make strides in improving productivity through cloud adoption. This connection between employees, data, and applications reduces context switching, centralizes workflows, and promotes efficient actions.

According to Harvard Business Review, the cost of switching between applications is just over two seconds, and the average user toggles between different apps nearly 1,200 times per day.8 This translates to spending just under four hours per week reorienting themselves after switching to a new application. Annually, this adds up to five working weeks or 9% of their total work time. The opportunity to connect employees to data and collaborative tools with the cloud will save valuable time and enable organizations to achieve more.

Move to the cloud with AIM

At Microsoft, our mission is to empower organizations to embrace cloud technologies and help enable a smooth transition. To accomplish this goal, we have introduced AIM, which stands for Accelerate, Innovate, Move.

AIM is a comprehensive program designed to provide organizations with a tailored path to confidently migrate critical processes to the cloud. This initiative helps organizations optimize their systems for enhanced business agility, security, and AI technology integration. AIM offers qualified customers access to a dedicated team of migration advisors, expert assessments, investment incentives, valuable tools, and robust migration support.

With AIM, customers gain access to a range of licensing and deployment offers aimed at reducing costs and maximizing their investments. On-premises customers can take advantage of discounted pricing when transitioning to the cloud, allowing them to optimize their investments as their businesses continue to grow.

When moving from on-premises to the cloud, customers can anticipate a positive ROI. Comprehensive studies reveal that over a three-year period, Dynamics 365 ERP solutions demonstrate strong customer ROI:

With Microsoft Dynamics 365, organizations can confidently embrace cloud migration, equipping themselves with essential capabilities to excel in a rapidly changing economy.

Start your journey today.

Welcome to a new era in enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, powered by AI. In recent years, businesses have embraced AI to automate and enhance processes from planning to forecasting. Now, generative AI is taking center stage as a game-changing technology that promises to modernize the way work gets done, driving innovation across ERP; from streamlining operations to speeding time to actionable insight.

Dynamics 365 Copilot, announced in March, takes advantage of recent advancements in generative AI to automate tedious tasks and unlock the full creativity of the workforce. In April, we shared how generative AI can be applied to key supply chain processes, and today we are introducing more AI-powered assistance across our ERP portfolio, included in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance, Dynamics 365 Project Operations, and Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. To activate these new Copilot features within your Dynamics 365 products, work with your IT admin.

ERP systems have long been the central nervous system of modern businesses, centralizing data for better business insight from core functions like finance, HR, procurement, resourcing, and supply chains. However, traditional ERP solutions have struggled to keep pace with the dynamic nature of today’s global markets. Complex and rigid processes within ERP create more work for people, and repetitive manual data entry overwhelms departments. Dynamics 365 Copilot promises to help finance managers, collections agents, project managers, and procurement professionals complete time-consuming tasks and get insights faster.

Speed time to insight—get the most from your ERP data

Harnessing big data is even more crucial as we enter a new era defined by next-generation AI. At Microsoft Build 2023, we announced how Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Microsoft Fabric work with Dataverse and our business intelligence tools to deliver actionable insights and reporting. Our upcoming extended planning and analytics solution will build on this powerful foundation to help finance managers and business analysts spend less time slicing and dicing data. With the ability to use familiar tools like Microsoft Power BI and Excel infused with Copilot capabilities, these professionals can:

  • Use natural language to bring data to life by simply describing the visuals and insights that one is looking for. Copilot will help create a Microsoft Power BI dashboard or report—complete with visualizations and summaries—and help refine it. One can dig into the data further by asking questions. Copilot will find the right answer.
  • Collaboratively align plans, budgets, and forecasts with business strategy.
  • Streamline sales and operations planning.
  • Automate financial consolidation for seamless book closing.
  • Strategically close talent gaps for an empowered workforce, gain a comprehensive view of cash flow dynamics, and access highly accurate predictions through advanced predictive analytics powered by machine learning and AI.

By using these tools and technologies, finance managers can optimize their performance, allocate resources effectively, and drive better financial outcomes for their organizations.

Deliver more strategic value with intelligent automation for project managers

Project managers frequently struggle to complete projects on time and within budget. Today, we are announcing Copilot capabilities for Dynamics 365 Project Operations to dramatically reduce the time spent on project status reports, task planning, and risk assessments.

With Copilot, project managers can rapidly create new project plans for new engagements in minutes, instead of hours, simply by describing details of the project using natural language. Copilot will generate a project plan that can be further refined by the project manager.

Once the project is underway, the project manager can use Copilot to create a project status report, which Copilot will help generate in moments—reducing the hours often spent manually researching and writing. To ensure project success, Copilot then can be used to identify risks and suggest mitigation plans on a continuous basis. For example, the project manager can prompt Copilot to search across all open projects to identify common project risks that can derail a project, such as significant delays or budget overruns.

With Copilot, project managers can improve efficiency, reduce risks, and focus on more strategic and value-added activities.

Disruptions to supply chains are an everyday occurrence, and supply and demand can shift quickly. Workers like procurement professionals and buyers are tasked to sort through large volumes of purchase order change responses daily and need more intelligent and agile tools to help address and streamline this process. Order responses oftentimes require changes to ordered quantities, delivery dates, or products delivered. Today, procurement professionals must review the changes for individual orders one by one to identify the risk to plan and potential downstream impacts. With Copilot in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, users are able to efficiently handle changes to purchase orders at scale and assess the impact and risk to help optimize procurement decisions.

They can quickly identify high-impact or low-impact changes and take rapid action to address any risk. Copilot enables quick collaboration with internal and external stakeholders that brings relevant information into Outlook and Teams using natural language. Users can also dig deeper with pointed questions to refine and approve changes so they can rapidly adapt their sourcing plans to meet customer and partner needs.

At Microsoft, we are fully committed to revolutionizing the future of ERP by harnessing the power of intelligent, composable technologies. With its ability to speed time to insight, intelligently automate processes, and foster productivity, Copilot can help you stay ahead in an increasingly complex business landscape. With Copilot, you’re in control as it is grounded in your business data and automatically inherits your valuable security, compliance and privacy policies, regulations, and processes. Finance teams are doubling down on their efforts to keep up with our world’s increasingly volatile and interconnected markets that demand more fluid operating models, extending beyond the walls of an organization. This means that the role of the finance leader has evolved from being an economic guardian inside the walls of an enterprise to designing new business models that focus on delivering customer value outside of an enterprise. This evolution is only possible through a tight partnership between the CFO and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to ensure data security while activating insights at every level of the organization. Businesses are moving away from rigid and monolithic solutions towards agile business applications that can be deployed quickly, integrated seamlessly with other existing systems, and can collect and unify extensive amounts of data from various touchpoints unlocking siloed data. According to Forrester, siloed data inhibits organizations from creating a comprehensive profile of customer needs, a challenge for 44 percent1 of retail decision-makers.

To drive better personalization, organizations also need to create a single view of their orders across all engagement channels. Propelling this shift is the realization by business leaders that they can leverage best-of-breed applications to avoid costly and time-consuming rip and replace business processes while still achieving the same objectives.

Last month we announced the general availability of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Intelligent Order Management, a solution that enables businesses to accelerate agility by leveraging easy-to-deploy out-of-the-box connectors within a low-code or no-code environment. This month, we are pleased to share several integrations and enhancements that further expand the capabilities of Dynamics 365 Intelligent Order Management.

Rapidly scale with partner connectors

McKinsey & Company2 recently interviewed 60 senior supply-chain executives from across industries and geographies. 85 percent of respondents reported that they struggled with inefficient digital technologies to address logistic disruptions, shortages of parts and materials, and sudden swings in demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. designed to allow businesses to rapidly scale with out-of-box, pre-built partner connectors to e-commerce platforms, fulfillment services, delivery partners, and other back-office systems. Through our growing ecosystem of partners, we provide companies with new levels of agility by seamlessly integrating with other best-of-breed solutions.

Some of the order intake systems that Intelligent Order Management offers pre-built connectors are Orderful and BigCommerce. BigCommerce is a cloud-based e-commerce SaaS platform, and Orderful is a cloud-based electronic data interchange (EDI) platform that allows enterprises to integrate EDI transactions from Orderful’s network. These new order intake sources enable more nimble operations, allowing businesses to capitalize on new opportunities faster by accepting orders from anywhere.

Another integration that we are proud to announce is with ShipStation. ShipStation is a web-based e-commerce shipping platform that helps merchants quickly generate shipping labels for their online orders. By integrating ShipStation with the Intelligent Order Management platform, users can bring all their carriers and order sources together within one unified solution.

Finally, Intelligent Order Management users can now connect to Avalara, an automated tax compliance solution that determines order tax rates based on geolocation and product classification, and also Flexe, a cloud-based platform that unifies warehouse sourcing and streamlines material handling operations.

By adding these pre-built partner connectors to Intelligent Order Management, our solution provides a foundation for businesses to build agility and resiliency into their order management processes and free themselves from legacy and inefficient digital technologies.

Accelerate time to market

Organizations can no longer afford to be rigid and reactive, and the push is for flexible, adaptable, and agile architecture. A survey conducted by McKinsey & Company3 showed that highly successful agile transformations typically delivered around 30 percent gains in efficiency, customer satisfaction, employee engagement, and operational performance, making the organization 5 to 10 times faster and turbocharging innovation.

Thanks to our partnership with ShipStation, Intelligent Order Management now saves users time with the capability to print shipping labels directly from its own application.

We are also making updates to system functionality such as adding internal to external ID transformation. With internal to external ID transformation, users can establish different mappings with different providers. For example, a user can map different names for the same product or SKU from an e-commerce system, such as BigCommerce, to Intelligent Order Management. This type of internal to external ID mapping is critical because Intelligent Order Management is used in complex order environments where data is communicated between many internal and external systems.

We have also added localized Business Event definitions and Provider definition metadata to localizations. The updates to localization also extended localization beyond English to the following languages: Arabic, Danish, Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.

Additionally, users will now enjoy an enriched Power BI architecture including a set of dashboards embedded into the user interface that is based on Microsoft Power BI technology. The Power BI dashboards provide longer-range insights into the order and fulfillment data that is moving through the app.

Improve order accuracy with fulfillment insights

According to a recent “final mile” survey by Gartner®, just 18 percent of organizations report fulfillment accuracy rates of 95 percent or better4. At Microsoft, we believe that digital solutions are a promising path to improving this key performance indicator, and our new Order insights dashboard can help companies do exactly that.

Dynamics 365 Intelligent Order Management data driven and AI infused Order Insights Dashboard

The order insights dashboard (shown above) provides in-depth visibility into aggregated order fulfillment activities flowing through Intelligent Order Management. From a single screen, users can quickly review key performance indicators such as Lines per order on average, Order count, Number of order lines, and Orders past due. Users can also see performance metrics of individual providers, and if there is an issue, they can drill down into the provider’s details to learn more.

Within the Insights menu, we have also introduced different dashboard views to provide users with the whole picture of what is happening with an order. For example, the Daily Events dashboard gives users an overview of any failed order orchestration steps, flagging them to help in the decision-making process.

Today we are excited to announce the general availability of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Intelligent Order Management, a cloud-based solution that helps accelerate omnichannel transformation from order intake through orchestration to fulfillment.

Increasingly, consumers expect seamless omnichannel buying and after-purchase experiences with multiple fast delivery options. Companies are responding to this challenge by adopting solutions to centrally manage the entire order lifecycle from the time their customers place the order to the time it is delivered. Dynamics 365 Intelligent Order Management enables organizations to adapt quickly and meet future order and fulfillment complexities while supporting contemporary methods like buying online or from an app for in-store or curbside pickup.

With Intelligent Order Management, business professionals gain real-time cross-channel inventory visibility and advanced analytical capabilities for better decision-making processes. Using AI-powered order insights, they can re-model and orchestrate the order fulfillment journey with easy-to-use drag and drop tools, and proactively overcome bottlenecks— all while driving efficiencies across the supply chain to ensure that their customers’ needs are met on time and cost-effectively.

Order fulfillment becomes a competitive advantage

According to Statista, “In 2019, the same-day-delivery market in the United States amounted to 5.87 billion U.S. dollars. By 2024, this market is forecasted to reach 15.6 billion U.S. dollars. Same-day delivery in e-commerce in the U.S. is one of the most requested services.” ¹

At Microsoft, we view this rise in demand for same-day delivery as an opportunity for businesses to turn order management into a competitive advantage. With Intelligent Order Management, we are providing businesses with the ability to meet these growing digital commerce needs by automating and optimizing fulfillment using real-time omnichannel inventory data supported by AI and machine learning.

Learn more in this webinar: Turn order fulfillment into a competitive advantage.

Configurable, not coded

According to Gartner®, “by 2023, 50 percent of medium to large enterprise will have adopted a low code application program (LCAP) as one of their strategic application platforms.”² In responding to the trend toward low-code/no-code (LC/NC) applications, our solution is designed to be configured, not coded, making it a more modern open platform. Moreover, it allows users to proactively overcome disruptions by reconfiguring order flows using a powerful but simple drag and drop interface. With these tools, users can rapidly deploy and scale with the latest fulfillment methods by leveraging pre-built connectors to various ERP, order intake, fulfillment, and delivery partner from our growing ecosystem.

Solution architecture

One of our objectives with Intelligent Order Management is to enable order intake from a variety of sources and pass them through the order orchestration, and process layers within the application. Intelligent Order Management’s event-driven order orchestration services then coordinate the events triggered by various APIs to different system connectors to make optimal fulfillment decisions. These decisions are continuously communicated and tracked for the entire order life cycle across all fulfillment partners and legal entities.

We also wanted to ensure that Intelligent Order Management could be used with other legacy systems within your business and since this is built on the Microsoft Power Platform, it enables us to deliver the low code, no code environment that users need to adapt quickly and respond intelligently to constraints and disruptions in the supply chain.

What’s next?

Dynamics 365 Intelligent Order Management allows companies to intelligently orchestrate fulfillment and automate order flows through a rules-based system with effective exception handling. Our groundbreaking solution also empowers business users with real rime visibility across inventory and order flows, and more importantly, provides the capability to quickly adjust and change any order path. Intelligent Order Management uses machine learning to learn how business users react to each exception and provide better recommendations each time–helping them achieve optimal stock levels and improve cash flow.

COVID-19 has had a significant impact across organizations regardless of size, industry, and location. Our valuable, and free, Finance Reimagined virtual CFO summit explored the many implications for finance leaders and their organizations as they attempt to adapt operations in this uncertain time.

You can now watch on-demand content from this summit, including more than a dozen sessions from the event, so be sure to log back in or sign up for free to watch the on-demand sessions.

From this amazing day, which included more than 2,000 finance leaders, we captured incredible insights to help you steer your organization through this crisis and reimagine the future. Finance leaders shared how they sustained core processes through immediate action, shifting from in-person to remote work, including how to complete a virtual close. Other lessons included how to strategically cut costs during uncertain times, while reducing risk and improving compliance.

Leaders shared best practices for understanding and maintaining employee engagement and developing essential skills while remote, as well as for safely transitioning the workforce back to the office. Insights included learning how to adjust for headcount and pay scales for employees spanning across regions.

The other focus was reimagining the future. While we may not be able to predict the future, we can work to prepare ourselves for a new normal. Business complexity will continue growing, data will continue surging, and risks, threats, and regulations will continue increasing. Expectations on finance departments to manage these challenges will continue rising, too.

Fortunately, changes in technology, processes, and our organizations’ underlying cultures will enable us to address these needs. We explored how finance leaders are leading their company’s through this transformation, leveraging tools like AI-driven insights to improve forecasting and scenario analysis. Leaders shared hard-won lessons and specific, step-by-step tactics that other organizations can successfully adopt.

It’s meant to provide you with a replicable way to transform your finance team into an optimum operating model so that you can rely on predictable outcomes and gain long-term value through real-time insights.

Review many small-group roundtables

It was fantastic to see so much direct engagement and participation across our roundtables. In these breakout sessions, CFOs and other peers shared how cost reduction and risk mitigation represent some of the most important and often first actions taken to recover from a crisis. They discussed how they’ve cut costs, ensured liquidity, and managed cashflow. The pandemic has forced manufacturers to make rapid adjustments, like changing factory layouts and bringing plants online with inexperienced staff while trying to maintain quality and safety standards. To address these challenges, manufacturers will need to focus on reskilling and cross-skilling to augment a worker’s knowledge. Today we’re announcing new updates to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management aimed at solving these challenges, enabling frontline workers to adapt to increased complexity and fast-changing business needs.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides is now integrated with Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management to provide interactive work instructions and guided workflows for frontline workers right at their workstation on the factory floor. The integrated scenarios enable the frontline workforce to adapt to increased business complexity and fast changing business needs by giving them interactive instruction on daily procedures so they can make the right decision at the right time even when working with complex and dangerous machinery.

Within Dynamics 365 Guides, frontline workers can take multiple guided workflows or paths to complete a job—useful in make-to-order scenarios or when encountering issues, such as an abnormal reading on a gauge. Content can be updated easily, without coding, helping ensure the workforce is safe and compliant by adhering to the very latest standard work procedures.

In addition, organizations can reduce asset downtime by integrating Dynamics 365 Guides with Microsoft Power Apps and IoT data, enabling frontline workers to proactively detect and prevent equipment failure and reduce costly downtime.

“This new technology will bring a more engaging opportunity to unleash creativity of our employees as it provides something that the manufacturing industry has not seen or imagined yet.”Geneviève Bertrand, VP of Information Technology, Kruger

Simpler UI for greater agility and productivity

The integration of Dynamics 365 Guides with Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management is enabled by the new production floor execution feature in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. It provides a modern, touch-friendly UI that is extremely easy to use. This new interface works great in poorly lit spaces like a factory floor and helps frontline workers manage multiple jobs at the same time.

The new production floor execution feature in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management provides a modern UI that helps frontline workers to be more agile and productive.

“The production floor execution user interface has found the perfect balance between shopfloor-style navigation and visibility of upcoming production jobs.”—Evert J Bos, Technical Fellow, Sikich LLP

Overcome disruptions to keep production running without interruptions

Manufacturers require strong product data management, version control, and engineering change management to succeed in a world of constantly shrinking product lifecycles, stricter quality and reliability requirements, as well as an increased focus on product safety.

The new Engineering Change Management add-in for Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management enables manufacturers to bring structure and discipline to the product data management process and enables products to be defined, released, and revised in a controlled manner.

Through product revisions and engineering change management, it is possible to document and assess the impact of applying engineering changes throughout the entire lifecycle of the product.

Companies can ensure compliance and achieve on-time delivery by quickly responding to changing customer or supplier specifications, regulations, and safety standards. They can overcome disruptions due to quality issues and obsolete parts by quickly resolving them to ensure that production lines are running without interruptions.

Manufacturers are enabled to bring structure and discipline to the product data management process.

Avanade, a Microsoft partner, helps manufacturers around the world in their digital transformation using Microsoft Dynamics 365 technologies. Conrad Volkmann, Director ERP Global Competence Center at Avanade, explains the impact and outcomes customers can expect from the new Engineering Change Management add-in. “Engineering change will be supported natively in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management with a comprehensive and well-integrated functionality,” says Volkmann. “The new capabilities complete the offering for discrete manufacturers. The time and resource consuming process of managing engineering change with all the related master data is becoming more transparent to manage with full documentation and traceability of all changes. Especially when the same or similar products need to be managed for multiple or many production sites, the new engineering change capabilities will help manufacturers becoming more efficient in their engineering change processes.“

With engineering change management capabilities, companies can reduce manual errors and job and material cost variances when setting up bill of materials and inventory in the system whenever new parts are activated and old parts are made obsolete. This will help create a smooth end-to-end business process flow between the engineering and operations teams.

Enhance visibility and scale operations for your supply chain
