Often used together with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/haxtoolkit\/pattern\/g11-d-map-system-input-attributes-to-system-outputs\/\">G11-D: Map&nbsp;system input attributes to system outputs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"use-when\">Use when<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is possible to map user behaviors to system output. If system decisions depend on both input attributes and user behaviors, consider combining with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/haxtoolkit\/pattern\/g11-d-map-system-input-attributes-to-system-outputs\/\">G11-D: Map&nbsp;system input attributes to system outputs<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The user wants transparency into the system\u2019s general reasoning or a specific system action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Policy or regulations require the system to make an explanation available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how\">How<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaborate with an AI\/ML practitioner to collect information about how user behaviors inform system decisions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify which user behaviors the system uses as inputs for determining its decisions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retrieve the most important user behaviors for the system\u2019s output.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The explanation might cover a specific system decision (see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/haxtoolkit\/pattern\/g11-a-local-explanations\/\">G11-A: Local explanations<\/a>\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b) or general system behavior (see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/haxtoolkit\/pattern\/g11-b-global-explanations\/\">G11-B: Global explanations<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The content of either local or global explanations can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Explicit<\/em>&nbsp;and\/or&nbsp;<em>implicit<\/em>&nbsp;past user behaviors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Past behaviors of either&nbsp;<em>this<\/em>&nbsp;user or&nbsp;<em>other<\/em>&nbsp;users like them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A general summary of behaviors.\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The content of&nbsp;<em>local<\/em>&nbsp;explanations can also include specific examples of past behaviors (see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/haxtoolkit\/pattern\/g11-f-example-based-explanations\/\">G11-F: Example-based explanations<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The content of&nbsp;<em>global<\/em>&nbsp;explanations can also include types of user behavior the system uses as inputs for determining its decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"user-benefits\">User benefits<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enables the user to understand how the system connects user behaviors to system decisions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Facilitates user understanding by showing specific examples of past behaviors\u2014showing rather than telling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gives the user insights into the system\u2019s reasoning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enables the user to alter their behaviors to influence future system outputs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhances user trust because of system transparency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"common-pitfalls\">Common pitfalls<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s unclear why the important user behaviors are important.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>General summaries of past behaviors are too vague.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s difficult for the user to infer the connection between user behaviors and system outputs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The reasoning behind the system\u2019s decision is invalid, even though the decision itself is relevant to the user.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Too much information in an explanation can be overwhelming to the user.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note:&nbsp;<\/em>When leveraging user behaviors to determine system outputs, do so in a privacy-aware way.
