Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Cloud for Financial Services are leading the generative AI revolution in financial services, empowering industry professionals to securely and easily incorporate rich industry data and specialty data sets into their everyday activities while providing enhanced security and compliance at the same time. Microsoft has dedicated itself to generating strong partner momentum across the financial services space, including through creating and offering the tools Microsoft partners need to drive innovation, mutual growth, and success both now and as the capabilities of generative AI continue to evolve. LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group), among others, has already built pioneering new solutions aligned to this initiative.

Built in collaboration with LSEG, Financial Meeting Prep (see the recent announcement using the preview name, Meeting Prep for Financial Services) aims to streamline client meeting preparation for investment banking professionals. Combining LSEG Workspace, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft 365 Copilot, the solution will consolidate important data, introduce organization-specific insights, easily refresh content as new data becomes available, and enhance relationship manager productivity and decision-making. General availability of Financial Meeting Prep is expected by the end of 2024.

Gathering insights from online sources and proprietary financial documents is crucial for making investment decisions, strategizing, and conducting assessments. However, finding the right data can be time-consuming for financial services professionals, and reviewing the vast amounts of relevant information is nearly impossible.

With the Financial Insights Agent, now available in Copilot Studio, financial services professionals can quickly and easily gather information from financial news and regulatory reporting websites. And because this agent comes ready-made and is easily customized agent, you don’t need advanced development skills to get started.

The Financial Insights Agent gives high-quality results and works best when integrated with the financial document analysis skill for agents (preview), available in Azure Marketplace, which makes it possible for users to gain info and insights from financial documents provided by their organization, such as analyst reports and other complex financial documents that are stored in-house—even when the data is found in complex financial tables, graphs, or charts. This skill not only works with the Financial Insights Agent, but it can also be integrated into custom agents. For example, Reflexivity has been integral in helping Microsoft understand challenges in the industry. Within their own platform, they use this skill for certain document flows, helping financial services professionals derive insights from both structured and unstructured data more efficiently so they can make informed decisions faster.

  • Personalized Shopping Agent: Improve shopping experiences with tailored customer conversations.

Personalized Shopping Agent

The Personalized Shopping Agent can engage in natural language conversations to understand and respond to shoppers’ needs. It provides tailored recommendations based on the shopper’s specific requirements and preferences. Additionally, it can handle specific requests, such as finding matching items or suggesting outfits for specific occasions. The agent leverages Retail Data Solutions, using aggregated product catalogs, and AI orchestration tools to provide accurate and contextually relevant answers.   

Store Operations Agent

The Store Operations Agent revolutionizes how store associates handle daily tasks with its headless architecture that integrates into applications or websites. It offers ready-to-deploy plugins for:

  • Product search or inventory search: Real-time access to product details and stock.
  • Order details: Tracks order information down to the line level.
  • Incident management: Resolves incidents using Copilot and ServiceNow.
  • Task management: Integrates directly with tasking apps.
  • Omni channel access: Provides natural language access to current prices, promotions, and information.

The agent integrates seamlessly with Dynamics 365 Finance, Dynamics 365 Commerce, and ServiceNow. These integrations can extend to other enterprise resource planning (ERP) software and applications with pre-built connectors and APIs. These features are continually updated, adding more plugins to help partners scale operations.

Partners can also utilize the Store Operations Agent alongside their own solutions to accelerate customer adoption. Accenture Avanade has launched a Clienteling copilot, which has Store Operations Agent embedded and assists store associates in managing daily tasks efficiently. It also offers a natural language query interface for store policies and procedures, enabling informed decision-making for store associates and managers.

Regulated Environment Management

Regulated Environment Management (REM) in Azure, currently in private preview, supports cloud adoption as part of Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty. REM simplifies the configuration, deployment and management of regulated environments through landing zones, policy and drift analysis. Starting November 2024, REM will shift to a subscription-level service, offering benefits like data isolation, regional boundaries, and group management of landing zone configurations. Transparency logs and the Landing Zone Account (LZA) simplify managing configurations and provide data residency. REM also includes a REST API for easier integration.

In the Microsoft booth, our partner PTC demonstrated the impact AI can have on product lifecycle with a well-managed digital thread. Their demo showed how Vestas, a wind turbine manufacturer, leverages PTC’s design, Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions to develop products. PTC’s new digital thread solution uses Azure and Microsoft AI to bring these tools together to enable real-time data synchronicity, traceability, and version control across Vestas’ product lifecycle. This single source of truth simplified the development process and enabled Vestas to continue reusing valuable data throughout the product’s lifecycle.

The power of mobility copilots 

In the automotive industry, information workers are found across many business functions: research and development, manufacturing, sales, digital experiences, after-sales, and commercial operations. Information workers have different roles and tasks, for example: 

  • Requirement engineers: Define functions of the vehicle based on market requirements.
  • Software developers: Create new software defined vehicle functions.
  • Fleet operators: Operate mobility services and fleet operations for commercial operations using fleet management solutions.
  • Repair and maintenance technicians: Provide repair and maintenance services in the workshop. 

A function-based copilot can leverage multiple systems to provide a unified user experience for increasing productivity. To be more effective, the copilot user experience can be optimized for each type of end-user depending on the nature of their tasks and work environments. For example, the copilots run in different types of applications, devices, and uses, such as, end-user programs, desktop computers, mobile applications, or as voice only assistants—requiring different types of user interactions. Application and data integration in automotive can be complex as the ecosystem of software vendors create specialized data and applications that address industry-specific needs, such as functional safety and compliance during development, and right-to-repair regulation for after sale.

For connecting, ingesting, and analyzing mobility and industrial data, organizations can use Microsoft Azure data analytics and messaging services such as Microsoft FabricReal-Time Intelligence, and Event Grid, to process streaming data from different kinds of devices, from vehicles to robots. Furthermore, Copilot, available across the Microsoft stack in trusted products such as Dynamics 365, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Teams, can promote additional collaboration, and increase productivity. 

The latest mobility partner copilots 

Microsoft Industry Clouds is redefining the way industries operate, with tools and guidance to support partners in the creation of industry copilots. Mobility-specific reference architectures are available to help to plan and build complete solutions. As part of the Microsoft commitment to empowering a global partner ecosystem of industry experts, we work closely with partners to build solutions based on customer pain points. Microsoft recently collaborated with industry partners, Netstar and KPIT, to create copilots that address concrete needs in the automotive industry. These solutions will soon be available in Azure Marketplace:

  • Netstar has created a fleet operations copilot that simplifies the work of the fleet manager by interacting with vehicle, driver, and task management subsystems.
  • KPIT has created a repair and maintenance copilot that enables repair and maintenance workers to fix vehicles faster, at first visit, thus increasing customer satisfaction.

Fleet operators need to focus on operational efficiency to maintain and increase business profits—this means making quick decisions on vehicles, driver allocations, schedules, and tasks to optimize cost. Furthermore, to obtain a comprehensive view of the operation while in the office and on the move, a fleet manager relies on information from multiple systems. 

Netstar has created a copilot that integrates different systems to provide a unified experience that enables fleet managers to extract relevant information quickly and make decisions grounded on data insights in a short amount of time.  

The copilot integrates fleet information and telemetry data from the Real-Time Intelligence component from Fabric using two techniques: 

  • A predefined query set that executes common queries on vehicles, trips, and health.
  • A Kusto Query Language (KQL) query generation approach that creates dynamic queries on a scoped data set. 

To simplify interaction, Netstar has integrated custom cards that provide location information and maps to visually represent the position of vehicles and trips.

Repair and maintenance copilot from KPIT

Modern vehicles are complex from the mechatronic and software point of view. This leads to longer repair times, dissatisfied customers, and unnecessarily replaced part warranty cases, known as “no-fault found”, incurring costs for the automotive manufacturer. Customer satisfaction is deeply affected if vehicles cannot be fixed correctly at a fair price, on the first try. Hence, repair and maintenance is critical to the profitability of the automotive OEMs and their relationship with customers. 

A repair and maintenance technician uses multiple systems to fix a car. These systems range from specialized tools for vehicle diagnostics to digital repair and maintenance manuals, repair procedures, and schematics. Additionally, they need to track all labor and cost times. 

To address these challenges, KPIT has created Trace2Fix, a repair and maintenance copilot that interacts with the following elements: 

  • Vehicle diagnostics tooling to communicate with the car and read vehicle health, measurements, actuator control, and software lifecycle management.
  • AI-powered reasoning engine to diagnose issues by analyzing symptoms, evidence, and fault codes to identify the most probable root cause. The copilot then directs technicians through optimal test steps, providing access to relevant repair procedures and schematics.
  • Sample connections to the dealer management system and customer relationships management that leverages Dynamics 365 to handle appointments, scheduling, customer information, and inventory management. 

KPIT addressed interaction with the technician using both voice-only interfaces to facilitate hands free operations as well as custom cards to quickly display relevant repair information on different device types. With this solution, a repair and maintenance technician can access multiple systems to have information at their fingertips, leverage the Trace2Fix’s dynamic root-cause analysis and reasoning engine, and perform all necessary business actions to perform their tasks quicker.

For pro-code developers, copilots can also be created as services that leverage Semantic Kernel and connect to data sources and systems that are relevant for the customer scenario. The copilots are deployed as services in the cloud and integrated into front-end solutions.

This high-level diagram shows a common approach for the creation of a function-based copilot backend: 

  • API Management provides managed access to the copilot API, simplifying integration with multiple device front ends (such as mobile apps, desktop applications, augmented reality, and more.)
  • Usage statistics to improve the operation of copilots are stored in Fabric. They are used to improve the response of the copilots based on feedback from the users.
  • Memory along with user and vehicle profiles are stored using Azure Cosmos DB.
  • Plugins implement the required data and capabilities for copilot—such as integration of vehicle telematics data using Fabric with Real-Time Intelligence, retrieval-augmented generation using AI search for vehicle documentation, and integration of business data from the dataverse.

Accelerate the clean energy roadmap with new AI innovation 

We’re proud to share some highlights from the past year, starting with the announcement that Cognite is Microsoft Partner of the Year 2024. Cognite and finalists Scheider Electric, Accenture-Avanade, and Kongsberg exemplify the new wave of innovation currently transforming the energy sector.  

Cognite is integrating new AI advances shared at last year’s Ignite event, including Microsoft Fabric and expanded Microsoft Copilot experiences. In January 2024, Microsoft and Cognite announced a collaboration that integrates flagship product Cognite Data Fusion with Microsoft Fabric and Azure OpenAI Service. Cognite AI is a prebuilt, comprehensive AI architecture specifically designed for energy and resource companies to deliver a faster path to implementing AI. Cognite Data Fusion incorporates AI across the data stack from generative AI-powered contextualization to an intuitive natural language Copilot interface embedded in day-to-day tools. Most recently, Cognite announced a new solution, Cognite Atlas AI which brings context augmentation generation to Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, pushing the boundaries of what language models can do for industrial organizations

Schneider Electric continues making an impact with solutions that accelerate digital transformation and sustainability. Built on Azure, the Schneider Electric EcoStruxure Grid solution portfolio shows the company’s commitment to a more digital and electric world, and together with its Grid Operations Platform as a Service, supports the growth of distributed energy resources, microgrids, energy communities, and other flexible resources across digitally planned, designed and operated lifecycles. AVEVA, part of Schneider Electric, also uses Microsoft technology to help accelerate the energy transition and support long-term decarbonization with a cloud-native industrial data and application platform to give energy companies a digital backbone to unlock, contextualize, and share data for better decision making and more profitable and efficient operations. 

Driving more sustainable, efficient operations in asset-heavy industries, Kongsberg leverages the Microsoft Cloud and AI for its Industrial Work Surface, an industrial metaverse that includes mixed reality and digital twins. The solution is designed to help energy companies improve decision-making, maximize business performance, and drive value across the organization—in support of the world’s growing demand for more secure, equitable, and sustainable energy.

Microsoft partners SLB, Halliburton, and Accenture are also innovating with Microsoft Azure Data Manager for Energy, a secure, reliable, hyperscale and fully managed cloud-based data platform service. Customers can speed toward goals by taking advantage of easy interoperability across an extensible application ecosystem. They can integrate virtually any dataset, application, or cloud service while leveraging the applications they already use from SLB, Halliburton, Accenture, and many others. The platform is expanding to new regions and offers a new developer tier pricing to increase accessibility for more partners and customers. 

We are also pleased to announce EY as the Sustainability Changemaker for the second year in a row. Creating customer tools built on Microsoft technology has positioned EY as a leader in sustainability consulting within the energy sector. With EY’s tailored solutions, decision-makers in the energy industry can now oversee transformations across their enterprises, leveraging technology and data to modernize governance structures, tackle industry-specific risks, meet environmental, social, and governance (ESG) obligations, and deliver value for both their organizations and their stakeholders. These solutions provide a comprehensive view into energy demand, verifiable and assured value chain data, and sustainability performance management, enabling energy companies to achieve their sustainability goals and enhance operational efficiency.

The climate crisis affects people globally, and an inclusive startup ecosystem is critical for helping ensure that solutions have far-reaching benefits. We are proud to support underrepresented startup founders at events like CERAWeek and through programs such as Advancing Climatetech and Clean Energy Leaders Program (ACCEL) from Greentown Labs, Browning the Green Space, and the Energy Transition Studio for Startups which we launched this year in cooperation with high-growth climate tech companies FlexDAO, Line Vision, and Utilidata. The program is designed to empower energy transition startups worldwide, and we are pleased to welcome six more companies to the first cohort, including Carbon Guardian, GridBeyond, Hygenox, IEMS, Noda Intelligent Systems, and Norwegian Hydrogen.

Investing in sustainable AI 

In addition to supporting startups, we are also engaging in strategic regional partnerships to help ensure a sustainable future and equitable access to energy and digital technologies for everyone. Microsoft is investing $1.5 billion in G42, a leading AI company based in Abu Dhabi, to co-innovate and deliver advanced AI solutions with Azure across the Middle East, central Asia, and Africa. Microsoft and G42 are partnering to invest $1 billion in a data center and Kenya, which will be powered by geothermal energy and give east Africa access to Microsoft Azure. Other global investments include a $2.2 billion investment in Malaysia’s cloud and AI transformation, and a significant commitment to enable a cloud and AI-powered future for Thailand

Unlocking the transformative potential of AI for sustainability also requires best practices for investment, digital and data infrastructure, resource usage—such as Microsoft’s deal with Brookfield Asset Management to invest more than $10 billion on renewable energy capacity to power data centers—policy and governance, and workforce development. Mining companies are navigating the complex challenges reshaping industries worldwide. The global energy transition is at the forefront, with investors calling for sustainable practices and heightened accountability.1   

Digital transformation is essential for a resilient, durable, and sustainable mining sector. Geopolitical volatility and trade uncertainties are disrupting supply chains, while the industry grapples with the challenges of meeting the soaring demand for minerals essential for the energy transition. 

Existing deposits are being exhausted and new deposits are increasingly more difficult and expensive to discover. In 2015, McKinsey & Company reported that worldwide mining operations were 28% less productive than they were a decade prior, even after adjusting for declining ore grades.2 Nearly a decade later, the shortage now impacts the availability of metals creating a potential risk for a near-term supply shortfall, particularly for copper, lithium, and cobalt vital to the energy transition. There is an expected supply deficit in critical minerals like copper with a potential shortfall of 9.9 million tons by 2035.3 

The mining industry also faces a chronic labor shortage which adds even more to its challenges, with 86% of mining executives finding it increasingly difficult to recruit and retain necessary talent.4 Amidst these complexities, mining companies are striving to balance productivity and profitability with purpose using cloud-based platforms, the Internet of Things (IoT), mixed reality, and more recently, generative AI.

Accelerating digital transformation

In the December 2023 blog, I discussed how mining companies are adopting digital technologies to enable business agility, drive efficiency, and accelerate innovation across the entire mining value chain, from exploration and extraction to processing and transportation. While these efforts have traditionally centered around specific business outcomes, current trends emphasize broader goals such as corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets and the transition to net-zero emissions. 

Meeting these goals requires a strong data foundation, digital effectiveness, and digital maturity. Transformation starts with technology-savvy leaders who have a grounding in AI and a focus on sustainability. With a vision informed by a clear understanding of their organization’s challenges and opportunities, effective leaders can take a leap forward on their innovation roadmap with solutions like Microsoft Intelligent Data Platform, which provides a single, flexible platform for databases, analytics, AI, and data governance.  

Digital maturity deepens with an empowered, skilled workforce that harnesses AI to make informed decisions and streamline repetitive tasks, gaining more time for value-added activities. For example, in my last blog, I shared how Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Guides combines generative AI with mixed reality to help frontline workers in industrial settings complete complex tasks and resolve problems faster for minimal downtime and accelerated learning. 

Exploring innovation with a future-ready mindset 

At Microsoft, our enduring mission is to “empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more.” We are privileged to work with a partner ecosystem that shares our vision.  

Digital innovation that stays relevant over time integrates people, processes, technology, and information. Multinational Japanese firm Asahi Kasei Group and ZEAL Corporation showcased that approach by implementing a data management platform based on Microsoft Azure Data Factory, Microsoft Purview, and Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics. The platform unifies 1,200 systems across multiple diverse operations such chemicals, healthcare, electronics, construction, materials, services, and engineering. By eliminating data silos, the team can gain new insights that unlock business advantages.

Siemens is another great example of enabling people to achieve more. To empower employees, the company created an AI-powered collaboration app based on Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft Teams. Siemens aimed to enhance innovation, efficiency, and problem-solving agility by connecting field and shop floor workers with operations and engineering teams. Now, frontline workers who find problems in the design and manufacturing process can easily connect with engineers to resolve them. 

Employees can receive notifications, create problem reports, and collaborate on tasks on any device. The app provides preconfigured industrial machinery solutions and accelerates knowledge-sharing with an AI-powered natural language interface. For instance, employees can report issues in their own language, which is automatically translated into a common language. 

In my final example, Schieder Electric wanted to speed innovation for key goals such as reducing carbon emissions. With a vast portfolio of connected devices, solutions, and services, AI has become essential for generating data-driven insights and actions The company is using multiple AI services to fast-track innovation, including Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft Cloud for Manufacturing, Azure OpenAI, and Azure Machine Learning. Schneider Electric is using Copilot to automate routine tasks and to offer intelligent code suggestions that streamline programmable logic controller (PLC) programming. The company has also created bots to help with customer service and financial analysis. 

Creating durable innovation for a sustainable future 

Digital transformation can be a long journey, and the pressing issues of today can sometimes overshadow our efforts toward growth and innovation. For durable innovation, we incorporate the McKinsey Three Horizons Model into our digital transformation roadmaps. 

The model provides a structured approach that miners can use to allocate resources effectively, balancing immediate business needs with sustained innovation for future success. Organizations are encouraged to explore new markets and invest in business models, products, and technologies that align innovation programs with future challenges and growth opportunities. As a framework for strategic innovation and growth, Three Horizons Model can support miners during times of change, disruption, and uncertainty.   

In addition to innovation initiatives, we consider critical aspects such as user adoption, change management, change fatigue, organizational capabilities, culture transformation, workforce reskilling, and governance. These considerations are vital for futureproofing the mining enterprise and sustaining digital and AI innovation.

To support customers along their transformation journey, we announced several new innovations, including the new manufacturing data solutions in Microsoft Fabric (preview) and the Copilot template for factory operations on Microsoft Azure AI, new Copilot capabilities in Dynamics 365 Field Service, and improved traceability in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, all of which attendees had the opportunity to experience first-hand at the booth.

Ahead of the fair, we also published a new report in collaboration with MIT Technology Review Insights uncovering the current state and ambitions around AI in the manufacturing industry. The report clearly indicates that manufacturers are excited about the potential of AI and plan to make significant investments over the next two to three years to deploy AI at scale to unlock innovation and enhance efficiency.

Transforming the manufacturing value chain with AI

The Microsoft experience focused on how AI transforms the manufacturing value chain: starting with accelerating product development cycles, improving efficiency in the factory, making operations more sustainable, and finally empowering every employee across business functions with the latest AI tools. These four opportunities manifested as the four distinct neighborhoods in the booth, with demos and customer stories populating each one.

1. Unlock innovation in design and engineering

AI has the potential to unlock a tremendous amount of innovation in design and engineering by allowing manufacturers to simulate and generate new options faster. It can help accelerate development cycles for new products and services as shown by our customers Kuka & Schneider Electric, how manufacturers can accelerate the programming of industrial robots and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) with Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, significantly speeding up development times. Siemens, along with customer Harting, showcased how generative AI can be used to speed up the design process of new industrial connectors and revolutionize mass-customization. Additionally, our partners Threedy, PTC, Hexagon, Capgemini, and Ansys showcased how applying technologies from digital twins to mixed reality to the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing accelerates product development cycles.

2. Enable intelligent factories

Making factories smarter is top of mind for manufacturers. In this area of the booth, we showed customers how they can improve quality, resource utilization and accelerate issue resolution in the factory with industrial IoT, data, and AI. Along with our partners Accenture, Avanade, Sight Machine, Rockwell, and AVEVA, we showcased the manufacturing data solutions in Fabric (preview) and the Copilot template for factory operations on Azure AI. These solutions help manufacturers unify their information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) data estates in an industry standard data model on Fabric. The Copilot template then uses this unified data to answer questions asked in natural language to help resolve issues on the factory floor. In addition, we showcased solutions from partners such as Tulip, TCS, SymphonyAI, SAP with Syntax, Cognite, Weavix, and Unmanned Life and from customers including Andritz, Chevron, Electrolux, and Ecopetrol that utilize Microsoft Azure IoT Operations, Azure private multi-access edge compute (MEC), Azure AI, Fabric, and more to enable intelligent factories.

3. Create resilient and sustainable operations

Manufacturing companies are looking to make their supply chain and service operations more resilient and sustainable. In this neighborhood we showed how they can achieve their goals using the power of cloud, AI, and mixed reality. In collaboration with Volvo Penta, we showed how using Microsoft Copilot in Dynamics 365 Field Service and Guides improves technician training, service manager workflows, and eventually, delivers better customer outcomes for their marine engines. With Caterpillar, we showcased how their Service Information System built on Azure provides detailed service information for CAT products from 1977 up to today. We also showcased Microsoft Sustainability Manager, which helps organizations to record, report, and reduce their environmental impacts through the power of data and AI. Our partners Blue Yonder, O9, and Tools Group demonstrated the power of cloud and AI to make supply chains more resilient.

4. Enhance employee productivity with AI

AI has the potential to unlock productivity and innovation for employees in all areas of the business. In this area of the booth, we showcased how Microsoft Copilot in products such as Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Security, Microsoft Power Platform, Fabric, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Windows, and Bing on Surface devices can empower employees across business functions in the manufacturing enterprise to achieve more. We showcased how Microsoft Copilot for Security and Microsoft Defender for IoT empower security teams to protect their OT environments, bringing collaboration to the forefront by reducing knowledge barriers for securing such environments. In the Fabric demo, we showed how manufacturing customers can use the suite of analytics workloads in Fabric, Copilot in Fabric, and direct integration with generative AI models to transform their factory operations.

The BMW Group showcase was the connecting thread between each of the booth neighborhoods. Built in collaboration with Hexagon, NVIDIA, PTC, and Rockwell Automation, business leaders and dignitaries could experience how technology enables cutting-edge transformation through AI-assisted design, connected data, and agile production for organizations like BMW Group. Featured in the exclusive Hannover Messe press tour highlight, which hosted more than 40 international journalists, this demo garnered significant attention for depicting how the integration of technology is changing manufacturing as we know it.

A space for thought leadership, the Microsoft theater was very busy this year, bringing together C-level leaders, innovators, and business leaders eager to learn about how technology is changing the sector, what their peers are doing, and the importance of diversity within manufacturing. This space connected customers to the experts: creating a unique forum of innovation where solutions to complex industrial problems were revealed, and where ideas were brought to life.

The award honors the most promising and innovative digital best practices from the industrial and operations sectors: production, purchasing, supply chain, engineering, and after sales. This year’s MIMA winners were Mercedes Benz, Northvolt, Malvern Paralytical, Wilo, Andritz, and Danfoss.

Generative AI represents an enormous opportunity for manufacturers

With 63% of workers struggling to complete the repetitive tasks that take them away from more meaningful work, many are looking eagerly to technology for assistance. Generative AI addresses these realities by equipping skilled assembly, service, and knowledge workers with the information necessary to keep manufacturing moving. Integrating Copilot into Guides furthers Microsoft’s commitment to this underserved group within enterprises. Workers are using Copilot in Dynamics 365 Field Service to complete repair and service work orders faster, boosting overall productivity. Copilot is already creating efficiencies for organizations worldwide, though still in private preview, we’re excited to see how Guides unlocks frontline operations and use cases.

Copilot makes information and insight readily available. Generative AI enables Guides to put these details in context against neighboring machine components and functions, enabling technicians to repair and service faster. Copilot removes the guesswork or need to carry around those dusty old manuals. Users can ask questions using their natural language and simple gestures. Copilot summarizes relevant information to provide timely virtual guidance overlaid on top of their environment.

Volvo Penta is focused on transforming training in the field

Volvo Penta, a global leader in sustainable power solutions, is always looking for ways to utilize new technology to increase efficiency and accuracy and has recently been utilizing augmented reality (AR) capabilities that enhance worker training and productivity. As an early adopter of Guides and Microsoft HoloLens 2, Volvo Penta was eager to participate in the private preview for Copilot in Dynamics 365 Guides. For Volvo Penta, Copilot is another technology with the potential to unlock further value for their stakeholders.

Volvo Penta is part of a conceptual innovation exploration, to evaluate how Copilot can help optimize the training of entry-level technicians by enhancing self-guided instruction. As Volvo Penta’s Director of Diagnostics put it, “Copilot makes it feel as though a trainer is always on hand to answer questions in the context of your workflow.” Locating 10 to 15 sensors used to take new technicians an hour or more, and now it only takes five minutes. This time savings has the potential to significantly increase productivity and learning retention, helping Volvo Penta, its customers, and dealers, accomplish more. The company continues to innovate with AI and mixed reality solutions to modernize service and streamline frontline operations.

At Hannover Messe 2024, the company is showcasing how Copilot could serve their customers to improve uptime and productivity. In the demo scenario, Volvo Penta envisions its ferry captains using Copilot to address a filter issue prior to departure. Left without a service technician onboard, the captain troubleshoots replacing the filter, using Copilot and HoloLens 2 to do so with step-by-step guidance.

BMW Group is pushing the boundaries of vehicle design and development

BMW Group is improving its product lifecycle, incorporating generative AI, human-machine interactions, and software-hardware integrations for better predictability, optimization, and vehicle innovation. As a global HoloLens 2 customer, BMW Group has spent the last couple years developing its own immersive experiences and metaverse using mixed reality. Now participating in the private preview for Copilot in Dynamics 365 Guides, they are exploring how the combination of mixed reality and generative AI, together, can push the boundaries of innovation.

In private preview, BMW Group’s Digitization and virtual reality (VR) Team within research and development (R&D) is the first to evaluate Copilot’s potential on design and development. With Copilot, product designers and engineers are simulating how the use of different materials and components impact vehicle design and their environmental footprint. The insights gained through this approach will help BMW Group optimize engineering and production processes. The organization believes generative AI will also benefit its Aftersales frontline workers, providing them access to expert knowledge and guidance, whenever and where it is needed.

This joint collaboration will ultimately enable BMW Group to spark innovation and target the use cases that drive its own digital transformation forward.

Chevron is exploring the potential impact on frontline operations

AI, automation, and mixed reality solutions are poised to reshape industries everywhere. Within energy, a focus on safety and the desire to accelerate skilling has Chevron looking to advance the capabilities of its frontline workers for the future. Copilot in Dynamics 365 Guides offers Chevron the opportunity to optimize these operations, empower its workers, and infuse informed decisions throughout its value chain. AI and mixed reality, together enables Chevron to define energy in human terms.

Through the private preview for Copilot in Dynamics 365 Guides, Chevron is exploring new use cases at its El Segundo Refinery that could unlock further enhancements in worker skilling and safety.

As the world becomes more complex and economically interconnected, governments are facing extraordinary pressures to ensure that their tax policies and collection services are fair, efficient, and accountable. This resonates with our work at Microsoft for Public Finance, where our focus is to help governments increase efficiency in public finance, combat tax fraud and abuse, and foster economic development. Today, government agencies are actively evaluating how to utilize AI, particularly generative AI, to spark transformation in ways that help improve accountability and reignite economic progress.

Help reignite the economy and drive financial accountability

The new AI opportunities for public finance  

Public finance organizations are generally well positioned to take advantage of AI’s ability to redefine their services, operations, and impacts on government. Those who have adopted the Microsoft Cloud and Microsoft productivity applications are benefiting from the fact that, over the past decade, and especially the last 18 months, Microsoft has been integrating AI capabilities throughout our offerings.  

Copilots—AI-driven software assistants—are delivering immediate opportunities for ingenuity among ground-level and operational employees, as seen in Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365, the new Microsoft Copilot for Finance, and Microsoft Bing. For business and IT leaders, copilots across Microsoft Power Platform, Dynamics 365, Security, and GitHub make it simple to unlock powerful new capabilities with embedded, low-code features. And in cases where advanced solutions are called for, Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service enables the development of customized solutions such as virtual assistants, chatbots, automated systems, and intelligent applications.  

Thanks to the broad range of these capabilities, public finance agencies can move quickly to redefine their role and leverage new opportunities. To make this vision a reality, we focus on AI innovation with three specific objectives in mind.  

1. Simplify taxpayer experience and revenue collection 

One great opportunity with AI is to make it easier for people and businesses to pay the right amounts of taxes and fees, in ways that are embedded into their lives. AI powered solutions for taxation, customs, and license and permit processes can be simple and sensible while providing the security and compliance benefits of the cloud. AI helps with managing data and fostering faster ways of information sharing across agencies—a challenge that by one estimate costs European Union governments more than 50 billion euros a year.1 

In this regard, AI can help in many ways, including: 

  • Modernizing taxpayer services—New engagement models can proactively build data intelligence to improve revenue collection, while reducing the cost of compliance, increasing agility, and improving productivity. Taxpayers can enjoy seamless experiences fostering a greater sense of trust in agencies. This proved to be the case with Estonia’s Information System Authority, which created an AI assistant that grants people with access to secure information about vital government services in a matter of seconds as opposed to days. 
  • Boosting employee productivity—Employees tend to be more effective with tools that minimize drudgery and help them focus on delivering results and finding solutions. User-friendly, interoperable, and automated processes foster better productivity, and AI enables new ways to help employees find the right information at the right time. A key factor in realizing this potential is upskilling the workforce, which is why the Bank of Canada implemented an ongoing training initiative based on Microsoft Learn that provides individualized learning pathways with online on-demand and instructor-led content.  

2. Drive informed budgeting for economic development 

Trillions of dollars are distributed by governments around the world to households, businesses, local authorities, and others for stimulus, recovery, and resilience plans.2 This puts an enormous responsibility on budget and treasury agencies, which have the complex task of allocating public resources in ways that measurably impact economic development. These agencies require innovative, secure tools that enable them to allocate the right support to the right beneficiary at the right time. Done well, these solutions also enhance collaboration between government and the private sector, which ultimately fosters financial inclusion. 

To meet these challenges, AI can help by: 

  • Modernizing budget planning and execution—Employees in budgeting agencies often deal with legacy systems that are insufficient for accurate forecasting and planning. AI can help with new tools that improve these processes, as well as automate budget distribution, deliver reports, and improve forecast precision. Low-code, AI-enhanced tools can accelerate the creation of powerful solutions. In Japan, for example, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry slashed development timeframes from one year to as little as one month by adopting Microsoft Power Platform.  
  • Boosting employee productivity—Treasury agencies have significant management responsibilities, and high demands to operate with accountability and transparency. Cloud and AI can empower teams to better manage liquidity, optimize debt management, and manage reserves and investments, while also being efficient and secure. Productivity at the United Kingdom Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs improved dramatically with a new cloud solution to provide a customer portal, streamline business processes, and add real-time reporting. By automating claim entry, they processed more than 40% of their annual 250,000 payments in the first three months.  

3. Mitigate fraud and corruption in public finance 

Fraud and corruption are major problems that incur trillions of dollars in losses worldwide every year.3 AI can help public finance agencies reverse the trend by helping to spot activities that may signal fraud, evasion, or abuse of public funds. To do this, agencies need solutions that give them fast, accurate, and comprehensive analytics, with a 360-degree view of taxpayer profiles to make informed decisions. 

Examples of how AI can help mitigate fraud and corruption include: 

  • Improving compliance and protecting against fraud and corruption—Public finance agencies need solutions to combat illegal activities while also safeguarding taxpayers, employees, and all their data. AI enables solutions that analyze data from traditionally siloed, disconnected sources to detect anomalies and derive insights in previously impossible ways, while inherently protecting to ensure security and regulatory compliance. SymphonyAI, an enterprise software company that employs AI to solve financial crime, recently launched a copilot for investigators that automatically collects, collates, and summarizes financial and third-party information. Early experience shows that it can improve investigator productivity by more than 60%.  
  • Enabling modern risk management—Risk is often inherent for public finance agencies, so teams need effective, modern approaches to risk management. These solutions should deliver monitoring and reporting across organizations and agencies, ensuring that everyone has complete, appropriate access to information. A good example is an Electronic Invoice Anomaly Detector built jointly by Microsoft and the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT), which strengthens electronic invoicing and reduces fraud and evasion for tax administrators in its member and associate member countries worldwide. 

The essential role of responsible AI 

The promise of AI would be impossible without trust. That is why Microsoft has long been a leader in ensuring the development of responsible AI, with principles designed to put people first. We believe AI exists to enhance human capabilities, not replace them, and we are committed to empowering responsible AI practices that benefit the world at large.  

The Microsoft Responsible AI Standard defines product development requirements for Microsoft technologies, guided by the principles of fairness, inclusivity, reliability and safety, transparency, privacy and security, and accountability. We believe this holistic approach can help public finance agencies deliver actionable results for their communities, with a minimum of risk and unintended consequences.

Customers leading the way with AI and Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365

Microsoft customers are at the forefront of digital transformation with AI. For example, Petronas, Cegal, and Microsoft have teamed up to drive innovation with an innovative platform based on Microsoft Azure high-performance computing (HPC) and AI technologies.2 This initiative, which involves moving HPC workloads to the cloud, is anticipated to benefit energy operations for Petronas. 

More energy companies have announced commitments to implementing copilot to empower their workforce and advance their digital transformation journeys. Pacific Gas & Electric is leveraging Microsoft Power Platform, including AI and copilot features to address up to 40% of help desk demands to save more than $1 million annually. Global energy firm TotalEnergies is using Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Power Platform to improve operational efficiency, and this year all 100,000 employees will be trained to use these AI tools.3 Bp will also roll out Copilot for Microsoft 365 to its global workforce and empower them to improve workflows and enhance productivity.4

Startups speeding the energy transition 

The climate crisis impacts everyone, and diversity in the startup ecosystem helps to ensure that solutions also apply to everyone. People of color are disproportionately affected by climate change, yet Black and Latino founders receive less than 1.5% of total United States venture capital funding, women-founded organizations received 1.9% of those funds, and Black and Latino women founders less than 0.1%.5 

Transformation starts with people, not technology, and Microsoft is proud to support underrepresented climate tech startups. I am excited to return to Mobile World Congress (MWC), February 26 to February 29, 2024, in Barcelona. AI has become a strategic imperative for telecom companies to gain a competitive edge and thrive in the market.
