If you want page numbers that show the chapter number and the page number, such as 1-1 or 1:1, you can use the a heading style and the Page Number <\/b>Format <\/b> dialog box.<\/p>\n
If you want a header or footer that looks like this:<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
you can use sections and field codes.<\/p>\n
Let’s take a look at each option.<\/p>\n
First, apply a heading style, such as Heading 1, to each chapter heading in your document (use this style only for your chapter headings).<\/p>\n
On the Home<\/b> tab, in the Paragraph<\/b> group, click the Multilevel List<\/b> button, and then click the option that includes Chapter<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Then, insert a page number.<\/p>\n
On the Header and Footer Tools Design<\/b> tab, in the Header & Footer<\/b> group, click Page Number<\/b>, and then click Format Page Numbers<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Select the Include chapter number<\/b> check box.<\/p>\n
In the Chapter starts with style<\/b> list, click the name of the style that you applied to your chapter headings.<\/p>\n
Choose a different separator, if you want, and then click OK<\/b>.<\/p>\n

First, insert a section break before each chapter.<\/p>\n
In the header or footer, type Chapte<\/b>r and a space.<\/p>\n
On the Insert<\/b> tab, in the Text<\/b> group, click Quick Parts<\/b>, and then click Field<\/b>.<\/p>\n
In the list of fields, click Section<\/b>, and then click OK<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Press the TAB key to move the cursor to where you want to put the page number.<\/p>\n
Now, you’re going to insert the Page field. On the Insert<\/b> tab, in the Text<\/b> group, click Quick Parts<\/b>, click Field<\/b>, click Page<\/b> in the list of fields, and then click.<\/p>\n
