Learn moreThe Pomodoro Technique is a time management tool that divides your work into 25-minute intervals. These 25-minute intervals are known as pomodoros.
Practicing the Pomodoro Technique is easy. To try out the Pomodoro Technique:
- Set a timer for 25 minutes.
- Work on your project or assignment until your timer goes off.
- Pause and take a five-minute break.
- Set your timer for 25 minutes and repeat.
Once you’ve gone through four pomodoro cycles, it’s important that you take even longer breaks to keep your mind refreshed. You may want to take 15- to 30-minute breaks after four pomodoro intervals.
Why is it called the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique was created in the 1980s by Francesco Cirillo, who used a tomato-shaped timer to create his 25-minute interval time management method.1 “Pomodoro” means “tomato” in Italian.
Does the Pomodoro Technique work?
The Pomodoro Technique works by devoting 25 minutes to intense work while also giving you periods of time to take a break and de-stress. Because it incorporates many breaks, a lot of people find that the Pomodoro Technique also helps prevent burnout. The Pomodoro method is effective for some, but it may not be right for everyone. Tips for using the Pomodoro Technique
Here are a few tips to help you reach maximum productivity while you use the Pomodoro Technique:
- Store your phone in a separate room. If you become easily distracted by your phone, keeping it out of reach will help you focus on your work.
- Buy a timer. While everyone has a timer on their phones, using your phone makes it more likely that you’ll become distracted by it. Buying a kitchen timer or digital timer will make it easier to stay focused on your work.
- Keep a pen and a spare sheet of paper on hand. You’ll want to tally how many times you’ve completed a pomodoro so that you’ll know when it’s time to take a longer break.
- Silence your notifications. If you’re working on your laptop, an incoming notification can break your focus. Set your computer to Do Not Disturb or Focus so that you stay devoted to your work.
- Step away for your breaks. When the timer goes off and it’s time to take a break, make sure to step away from your desk and walk around. Taking yourself out of your focus zone will help you feel refreshed when it’s time to get back to work.
The Pomodoro Technique is an easy tool anyone can use to maximize your productivity throughout the day. Explore more inventive ways you can become more productive and organized.
