As Power Pages has become popular for website building, one common use case we see very often is to build Webpages which provides FAQ (Frequently asked questions) content about a certain topic. For e.g: For any new product launch, FAQ webpages are published by organizations to highlight key information for their end users. This process can often be cumbersome especially when the source content is large and can require multiple iterations to identify the right set of content to be included as FAQ. However, with the advent of Generative AI and its ability to generate/manipulate content into various forms, generating FAQ is one of those process where we can see amazing productivity gains.
Hence, in order to improve productivity of makers, we are launching a new skill in Power Pages design studio copilot which will allow makers to generate a FAQ style webpage just by providing link to a document as an input. This skill allows makers to provide the link to a word document uploaded to SharePoint/OneDrive for business and let Copilot automatically generate FAQ (grounded on the content of the document) organized in a webpage in Question & Answer format. Makers can then review the content and make changes to it if required.

This feature is available in preview in US region for all Power Pages customers. More information on the limitations of this feature can be found in FAQ for design studio. To learn more about various skills available in Power Pages design studio copilot, visit Overview of AI-powered and Copilot features in Power Pages (preview) | Microsoft Learn.

We are looking forward to your feedback, which will help us continue to build on and improve the capabilities of this feature. We want to hear from you!

We are excited to announce the all-new licensing dashboard and capacity management experience for Microsoft Power Pages!

Managing your Power Pages licenses has never been so convenient! A new licensing and capacity dashboard gives the administrator an overview of all the license types in use in the tenant, shows all relevant metrics of capacity in the tenant, and allows you to view the daily consumption data from the past three months and monthly consumption data from the past 12 months.

The new capacity management experience provides an overview of how the capacity is assigned between the environments. For environments near or over capacity, the consumption data from the past 3 months is shown in-line to help determine the required capacity for the environment.

In case of any licensing related issues, notifications are shown on the licensing dashboard screen. Administrators will also receive email notification with all the relevant information and links to resolve the issue.

This experience has started rolling out across regions and will be available in all regions by mid-December. Stay tuned for more updates!

With the evolution of Dynamics 365 portals into Power Pages over last 7 years, creation process websites has also changed drastically. However, for customers who are still using Dynamics 365 addon based licenses for their Power Pages websites, process of creating websites haven’t changed in last few years and have been complicated especially because it requires makers to go to Power Platform Admin center instead of starting from Power Pages maker experience .

With the latest release of Power Pages, we are updating website creation experience for addon license based sites and make it similar to capacity license based sites. As part of the new experience, following steps will need to be followed to create a website using Dynamics 365 addon based licenses:

a) Step 1- Creation of a new website:: In the old experience, to create a new addon license based website, makers have to go to Power Platform admin center, find a “Portal Addon” with state as not configured, click on manage and fill up the form to provision the site. This experience is described here Provision a site using the older add-on – Power Apps | Microsoft Learn.
As part of the new experience, a maker can simply create a website using standard Power Pages maker experience described here Create a site with Power Pages | Microsoft Learn and does not require any special steps. This will create a standard Power Pages trial website.

b) Step 2 – Assigning Dynamics 365 addon licenses to the website:: Once a maker has created a trial website, he can convert the website into production mode using following steps Convert a website | Microsoft Learn.
Till now, this experience of trial to production conversion only allowed makers to create Sites based on capacity based experience. However, with the new experience when makers/admins will convert a site into production mode, they will be provided with an Option to use their Addon based licenses (as shown below), if such licenses are active in their tenant.

graphical user interface, text, application

This will allow makers/admins to utilize the standard trial to production conversion flow to create a dynamics 365 addon based website.

This change will also enforce that number of addon license based websites which can be created in a tenant is not more than the number of addon based licenses active in the tenant which was possible in some special situations before. This will help admins to ensure licensing compliance by default.

This new experience is rolling out in the week of 9/25/2023 following our regional rollout process and will be available in all regions in next couple of weeks.

As Power Pages steps into the next phase of its journey, we are happy to announce Power Pages developer websites which will allow both low code makers and pro developers a playground to develop, test and upskill themselves on Power Pages capabilities without the hassle of signing up for time bound trials.
Power Pages developer websites are a great way to start your Power Pages journey as a developer/low code maker as they offer:

  • Ability to create a website using Power Apps developer plan
  • Power pages developer websites don’t expire in 30 days and can be kept active for longer duration as long as they have active usage.
  • All the Power Pages features are available on developer websites.
  • There are no additional steps to configure a developer website. Going forward, all the websites created in developer environment would be automatically created as developer websites going forward.

While developer websites will offer all the same features as standard Power Pages websites, however they are not optimized for production sites and hence comes with certain restrictions*:

  • Power Pages developer websites are Private by default and cannot be made public.
  • Power Pages developer websites cannot be converted to production sites.
  • Each developer environment can only have one developer website
  • Websites which are inactive for last 30 days are automatically suspended and deleted after next 7 days.

As usual, we are looking forward to hearing your feedback and are really excited to see more people join us on this Power Pages journey!

As we embark into 2023, we are continuing our journey to make Power Pages platform more secure, robust and reliable. As part of this journey, we are introducing a change in how a Power Pages website connects to Dataverse by leveraging Dataverse Application User concept.

As described in Power Pages documentation, every Power pages website connects to underlying dataverse instance using an Azure Active directory application which is created when a new website is created. This Azure Active directory application is mapped to a special “SYSTEM” user in dataverse and all the connection by website is made in context of SYSTEM user.
However, using “SYSTEM” user leads to some interesting challenges, for e.g: it becomes difficult to differentiate between API calls made by different websites present in the same environment. Also “SYSTEM” user comes with system admin priveleges on the environment including permissions like impersonation, elevation of priveleges etc which are not required for the functioning of a Power Pages website. Similarly if multiple websites are present in same environment, dataverse throttling limits are shared between these websites as they all connect to dataverse using same user.

Hence, in order to improve on these aspects, instead of using “SYSTEM” user, site will be using Application users to connect to Dataverse. This application user will be mapped to the same Azure Active directory application which is created everytime a new website is created and the name of this user will be in format ” #Portals – site name”.

This user will have following dataverse roles assigned by default

  • Portal Application User
  • Service Writer
  • Service Deleter

Apart from these roles, the user will also have “System Administrator” Field security profile assigned to it.
More details about this can be found in documentation here.

This change has been enabled for all regions as of Jan 7th 2023 except US government clouds and going forward all new websites created will be using application users by default.
All existing websites will be migrated to Application user over next few months as well and customers will be notified about the migration schedule for their websites through standard release notifications.
