We’re thrilled to announce that the Power Apps Developer Plan is now available in sovereign clouds starting with GCC and later this year will be available in GCCH and DOD.

Developer Plan is needed to get Developer Environments, which offer personalized spaces for makers to experiment, innovate, and build. They provide premium capabilities like Dataverse and premium connectors at no additional cost. These environments also adhere to your organization’s default Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policy for security. Striking a balance between control and empowerment.

How to get started?

As a Tenant level admin can create a developer environment on behalf of the maker and assign them as an owner. The owner will get a developer environment which they can use as personal space to explore and build. An admin will be able to create up to 3 developer environments for each owner. If no owner is selected the developer environment is created for the admin that is using this experience. These environments also get auto cleaned up in in case of 90 days of inactivity, making it easier for admins to manage. These multiple environments can be used to try capabilities like Pipelines and Application Lifecycle Management.

Tenant Level admin experience

These environments are unmanaged by default and can be made managed on tenant admin’s choice. On doing so managed environment policies will apply to Developer environments.

If your tenant admin has turned on developer environment creation for ‘Everyone’, you can also get environment through your Power Platform Admin center. By default, it is set to ‘Only Specific admin’. In addition, these environments can be reset in order to start fresh and can also be directly copied to other developer or sandbox environments. Learn more.

It’s important to note that these environments require a developer plan. If the developer plan is blocked by an admin, the developer environment won’t be created. Admin can manage this plan

Exciting news for Microsoft Dataverse makers!  Preferred Solution is now Generally available. This feature empowers makers to control which solution their unmanaged customizations should be saved in, making it easier to manage and export components to other environments. It will capture all of the unmanaged customizations that the maker does throughout the Maker Portal and associate those to the preferred solution. Previously, makers had to make those changes in the solutions area of maker portal for the changes to be captured in a custom solution.

Why Preferred Solution?

Preferred Solutions in Microsoft Dataverse offers a crucial alternative to the default storage model. By default, all solution components reside in the Common Data Services Default Solution or Default solution, lacking separation between makers, and hindering exportability. With Preferred Solution, users can designate a specific solution for their unmanaged customizations, enhancing control. Components created within this preferred solution streamlines management and can be easily exported/imported for seamless deployment across environments, overcoming limitations of the default model.

How can I set a Preferred Solution?

You can set your preferred solution through settings panel or from the solutions page:
Settings Panel
Setting Panel
Solutions page:
Solutions page

As we have now moved to GA, Preferred Solution is turned on by default. The admin experience, to turn off preferred solution during public preview, is no longer needed as we are now generally available. If you do not set a custom solution as a preferred solution, the CDS default solution or Default solution will be used as a preferred solution. You can always set your preferred solution.
Additionally, be mindful of any existing limitations in the preferred solution mentioned here as we work towards resolving them.

We are happy to announce public preview of Just-in-Time (JIT) Developer Environments, a smart routing that will be a game-changer for building premium apps with Dataverse.

It will assess whether the app you want to build demands more permissions than what your current environment provides. In cases of insufficient permissions, JIT Developer Environments steps in and promptly offer you a solution. With just one click, you will be moved to a JIT developer environment that grants full permissions in your own personal space. This environment will also give you Developer plan and will have your name as well as tenant regions already configured in single click.

This capability becomes accessible when you attempt to build a new app on the home page or app page, as well as when you create table on the tables page.

You will be able to use AI enabled app types like upload an excel file and start with a blank table with JIT Developer environment experiences.

If you already have a developer environment, rather than creating a new developer environment it will smartly switch to your existing developer environment. Also note that you will be able to see these options only if your admin has allowed developer environment creation.

Working with Dataverse is now becoming easier with ‘Developer environment’ that comes with premium capabilities, without any additional cost. You can work on Power Platform using Dataverse for building applications where now you can work with relationship modeling in Canvas applications, leverage Model driven applications, build virtual tables, Power FX, formula columns, ALM and much more.

Developer environment is great place for you to build and run the apps with Dataverse in your own personal space, without restriction and then eventually share and deploy to production environments. Developer environment honors tenant’s default DLP policy and hence a secure place for makers to start the experience while honoring their organization policy.

How to get started?
