Modern controls updates in canvas apps

We continued enhancing modern controls and theming and delivered some key enhancements, which are rolling out to our customers at the time of publish. Below are the updates made to controls and theming in the last month:

  1. Simple custom theming – We are excited to announce the availability of simple custom theming in canvas apps! This has been the most requested item in the theming space since the introduction of modern theming. With this feature, makers are no longer bound to one of the 8 out-of-box themes; instead, you can create your own theme by choosing a seed color for your theme and the font. The generated theme will then be applied automatically to all modern controls in your app, eliminating the need to manually modify the Color palette and Font properties on each control. We hope you enjoy this new capability, and we look forward to hearing your feedback!

    Simple custom theming
  2. Stream control We recently released new Stream control (based on SharePoint) in Power Apps in preview. The Stream control in Power Apps lets you embed Microsoft Stream (on SharePoint) videos directly in your canvas app. Adding a Stream video in your app makes a smooth integration of videos hosted on Microsoft Stream in your canvas app.

Upcoming enhancements to modern controls and theming:

We are currently working on a few exciting updates that will be released in next few weeks:

  1. New controls
    • Icon control We are almost finishing work for new icons based on fluent design language and preparing to deploy them. These icons will also be available as an additional feature on button control.
      Icon control
    • Toolbar control We also kicked off work on the toolbar control. The toolbar control is a horizontal bar that contains one or more commands that can be selected by the user. The commands can have text, icon, or both, and can have different appearance and behavior depending on the maker’s configuration.
      Toolbar control
  2. Modern theming for classic controls – To date, modern theming has had no effect on classic controls. This meant makers were forced to manually update the styling of classic controls to align with the modern theme, ideally using theme variables, for apps that contain both classic and modern controls. We are working to address this issue by allowing classic controls to automatically utilize the app’s modern theme as best they can to minimize the maker customization efforts in this area.
  3. Upcoming styling on all modern controls:
    • Fill – This property will be available to add or edit background color of all input controls, text control and more.
    • Padding – Makers will soon be able to provide left, right, bottom and top padding to almost all modern controls.
    • Border properties – We are making Border color, style, thickness and radius properties available to all applicable controls including input controls.
    • Align – We are also adding align options for button, badge and number input control.
Thank you to our community and makers for continuing to provide us feedback! This feedback is incredibly valuable and helpful in guiding improvements to modern controls and theming capabilities.

We continued enhancing modern controls and theming and delivered some key enhancements, which are rolling out to our customers at the time of publish. Below are the updates made to controls and theming in the last month:

  1. Number input Makers can add a number input control that can be used to type in or use the arrows to select a number value. They can also configure decimal precision and step values for this control. This control also provides number type as a default output to build numeric scenarios in Power Apps.

  2. Table control –An OnSelect event has been added to the Table control, allowing makers to specify an action when a single record has been selected. Users can still navigate rows in the Table using arrow keys without triggering this event.

  3. Collapsible sections in the properties pane – Modern controls have a new look with respect to the Properties pane with the introduction of collapsible sections. Properties have been reorganized and grouped into one of four sections: General, Behavior, Size and position, or Style and theme. This change improves consistency of the location of properties across modern controls, and can lead to a simpler maker experience in the properties pane by allowing makers to collapse sections of properties they are not currently interested in.

    • Stream control – Stream (on SharePoint) is an intelligent video experience that empowers you to record, upload, discover, share, and manage video just as you would any other file. Power Apps will soon publish a control for makers to configure a stream video to play in Power Apps. This is also the replacement of control for Stream (Classic) as the classic stream service is on path to deprecation in April.
  2. Upcoming styling on all modern controls:
    1. Fill – This property will be available to add or edit background color of all input controls, text control and more.

Modern controls updates in canvas apps

We made additional progress in the month of September on the journey to modernize Power Apps with the release of new controls and improvements on existing controls.  Below are the updates released in last month:

New controls released:

  • Header – Our first out-of-the-box building block that allows you to simply and quickly create a reusable app shell that is fully responsive and themeable. The first version of the control supports a logo, page title, and user avatar and allows you to pick between a few different style variants. Next in our sights for header is support for app navigation. We are actively monitoring any feedback you provide for this control, so don’t be shy about hitting the thumbs up or down and giving us feedback.

  • Modern Form control – We have a new form control based on modern controls in development which aligns better with the new design language and similar in functionality of existing form controls with no new learning curve for our makers. Support for combo box and some more field types will be shipped in upcoming updates on modern control. The validations pattern will also improve with the upcoming updates in form.

Key control improvements:

Below are the important updates we made to the controls last month

  1. Table
    • We have expanded our dataset support to include collections.
    • The Selected output property is now populated correctly when the Table renders in narrow list mode.
    • The list displays the expected layout when placed inside a container.
  2. Per control styling – Do you need a red button in your green app? You can now change the color palette of an individual modern control to be different from the theme using the new Base palette color property. This is a single property that impacts any surface of the control using a theme color, including interaction states like the hover and pressed states. If you later decide you want the color of your control to be driven by the theme again, simply click the Revert button next to the property or clear the value of BasePaletteColor.

What is next?

There are several awesome capabilities that we are going to be bringing over the coming weeks:

  • Font size property – Look out for Font size options being available on the modern controls next! Similar to color property, makers will be able to assign font size to controls which will impact all the right elements in the control. And similar to color property, makers will be able to reset it back to default with a single click.

  • Upcoming controls
    • We are about to release new control for number input with decimal support.
    • Makers will be able to add standalone icons and add a button and enable the property to add an icon on the button.

    • For form control, the support for combo box and in-built field validations will be rolled out in coming weeks too.

Modern controls updates in canvas apps

In the month of August, there was critical progress made on the journey to modernize Power Apps with the release of new controls and improvements on existing controls.

Below are the August updates for modern controls already released or currently in deployment:

New control released:

  • Table – The first iteration of a new responsive Table control is now available for makers. After connecting your Table to data and selecting the columns you want to see, the Table will show your data in a tabular or list format, depending on the width of the control. Following are the key properties & control behaviors for maker to utilize this control well:
    • There is default reflow built in which updates table to list view. And makers can also take full control of the responsive behavior of the Table by utilizing the Reflow property.
    • The tabular format boasts infinite scrolling to give users a more modern data browsing experience over paging. Note this initial version only supports connecting to Dataverse entities, but we will be expanding support to other connectors soon, as well as evolving the Table’s customization options.
Table to list view

Key control improvements:

Below are the important updates we made to the controls last month:

Text  – Ability to highlight text in the text control which allows for an unblocked copy and paste on the text control.
– Auto height for the text control is now available in the properties panel.
Date Picker– Control updated to be consistent with Fluent 2.
– New date format properties – Short, Long Abbreviated and Year Month, which are more accommodative of standard date properties across regions.
– New properties to customize date picker like StartDay, EndYear, StartofWeek, & more to make it more usable for end users.

What is next?

There are several awesome capabilities that we are going to be bringing over the coming weeks:

  • Per control styling – We are in progress on the first couple of styling properties that allow a modern control to deviate from the app’s theme. We’ll be starting with allowing makers to override the font size and color palette of a control.
  • Upcoming controls
    1. Header control: Starting this fall, makers can look forward to using out-of-the-box higher level building blocks to create their apps.  These controls will be able to handle more complex app scenarios while being easy to configure and responsive. The first of these controls will be App Header, which is expected in the fall. Improved app navigation is another concept we will address with these controls, and App Header will also be enhanced to handle navigation.
    2. Form Control: We have a new form control based on modern controls in development which aligns better with the new design language and similar in functionality of existing form controls with no new learning curve for our makers.

Modern controls updates in canvas apps

In the month of July, there is critical progress made with exciting updates on theming, releasing new controls and improvements on existing controls.

Below are the July updates for modern controls already released or currently in deployment:

New theming system:

We’ve introduced a new modern theming experience for makers. It allows you to change the look and feel of apps built with modern controls with greater ease and flexibility. In this initial release, makers can choose one of the 6 out-of-the-box themes from the new Themes pane:

6 out of box themes

When a theme is selected, it will automatically be applied to all modern controls, providing a fresh and cohesive look to your app through a single action:

chart

Classic controls can also take advantage of modern themes by accessing theme variables via Power Fx. In the example below, the classic rating control has been added to the app and made to align with the theme by mapping its color to the Primary color from the theme:

Theming is applied to classic controls

To try out this theming experience, enable the “Modern controls and theming” preview setting. Please provide us feedback from the thumbs up/down option in theme pane. You can also view full documentation here

New control released:

  • Combo Box – One of the topmost ask on dropdown has been the functionality of Combo box. We have recently released this new control which allows makers to setup option set with multi select and primitive search based on string as capabilities.
  • Toggle – This is also a recent addition to list of modern controls. This also has OnCheck, OnUncheck and OnSelect properties to use this control effectively.

Key control improvements:

Below are the important updates we made to the controls last month:

Radio  Radio control is now available in three different layouts:
Vertical layout

Horizontal layout

Horizontal Stacked layout
image (3).png
Dropdown The items limit to display in dropdown has been increased from 25 items to 500 items. We also fixed issues with player mode in studio for this control.
Button control Button control has more visual variants available:

Text Input  There are additional properties added on text input control for our makers to effectively use this control:
1)Placeholder – This is property for hint text which displays on control.
2) Format – The control now supports three formats – Text, Password and Search.

What is next?

There are several awesome capabilities that we are going to be bringing over the coming weeks:

  • Per control styling – We recognize that specific components in an app may need to be styled independent of the theme to achieve the desired app visuals. Towards this need, we are working on exposing more customization to modern controls that allow you to deviate from the theme styling. The initial focus of per control styling will be on color and font size.
  • Updates to theming system – We will be continuing to expand the capabilities of this new theming system. We are working to bring in custom themes, which will allow makers to create their own themes that infuse their unique brand identity and design preferences into the app and reduce the need for styling customization at the control level.
    2. Date Picker: There are some exciting updates coming on date picker control. Following are some improvements in progress:
      • The control will have visual improvements and are now more aligned to the design language of rest of controls.
      • We are introducing date format property which will help makers across the world define in local formats – like dd/mm/yyyy.
    3. Form Control: We have a new form control based on modern controls in development which aligns better with the new design language and similar in functionality of existing form controls with no new learning curve for our makers.
    4. Grid + List control: We have an exciting responsive control in works which makers will be able to add soon to display data as a grid or list, and they can configure the state of control depending on the width of the screen size.

  • More controls – Combobox and Toggle:

Toggle
  • New theming system – We are introducing a new theming system that will allow you to customize the look and feel of apps with greater ease and flexibility. Initial release will support 6 out of the box themes (custom themes are being worked on!)

  • Per control styling – Color and font support that will work with the new theming system (theming will no longer accidentally overwrite per control style changes). Initial release of per control styling is focused on color and font.
  • Improved authoring & controls experience – We are making enhancements to the authoring experience, to make it much quicker and easier to build apps. We are releasing weekly improvements with property set updates and enhanced functionality of existing controls to make them production ready.
