We are pleased to announce the General Availability of mobile offline support for canvas apps on iOS, Android and Windows devices. With the flip of a switch, your app can work with Dataverse data wherever you are–with or without network connection. Just build your app with standard Power Fx formulas and the offline feature handles all the complexity for you.

Canvas offline apps are easy. Here’s why.

Are you using LoadData/SaveData to cache and sync data for offline use? Do you need to support users in the field who work in low connectivity areas? Now, with the built-in Dataverse offline for canvas, build your app with standard Power Fx formulas enable the app for offline in the Power Apps Studio, and you’re done! (See Why use offline for canvas apps instead of LoadData/SaveData? | Microsoft Learn)

The first time a user open an app, all required data is downloaded to the device. If the app is configured to auto-generate an offline profile, the system identifies and syncs all data required to make the app run. We recommend this default mode for simple apps with small to medium-sized data sets. If the app needs to access large data sets with complex relationships, you can optimize the app’s performance by creating a custom offline profile (See Set up mobile offline for canvas apps – Power Apps | Microsoft Learn).

Canvas offline apps work in an “offline first” approach

Once data is downloaded, the offline enabled canvas app works in an offline first approach. The app reads and writes data to a local store on the device regardless of network availability. Local and server-side changes are regularly synchronized when the network is available.

By enabling offline, you can also improve the user experience when the app is connected to the network, especially when the user creates or updates rows in Dataverse. Reading and writing offline data access is usually much faster than waiting for online calls over a mobile network, so your user experience will be responsive even while the app is synchronizing data in the background.

Out of the box support for Dataverse files and images

In an offline-enabled canvas app, you can choose between downloading files and images on view or on sync. When files and images are configured to be downloaded:

 • On view: the content is downloaded when the user opens a file or when an image is presented to the user.
 • On sync: files and images are downloaded during the offline sync when the device is connected.

With these two options, you can decide to optimize for offline availability or disk usage depending on your business needs. See Configure files and images in offline canvas apps – Power Apps | Microsoft Learn.

Tips for creating great offline-enabled apps

We are introducing two new Power Fx functions: Connection.Sync to retrieve network and sync statuses and ShowHostInfo to display a more detailed device status page. See Set up mobile offline for canvas apps – Power Apps | Microsoft Learn.

We also recommend following this offline best practices to ensure a faster user experience.

Limitations and Availability

 • Non-Dataverse connectors such as SharePoint are not supported in offline-enabled apps.
 • The canvas app must be in a solution

Power Apps developers can turn on the canvas offline feature in the Power Apps Studio by navigating to the settings dialog of the canvas app (Settings > General ) and toggling “Can be used offline”.

For more details, see the documentation.

Do your users need to work on the go with spotty connectivity?

With model-driven apps offline for makers experience in general availability, it is now easier than before to set up an app to work offline. After enabling your model-driven apps for offline, people in your organization can work seamlessly without worrying about connectivity!

You can also choose the offline mode for your mobile apps. We are happy to announce the General Availability of the Offline-first mode that is optimized to improve the device performance and to work better in low-network conditions than “classic offline” mode.

Enable your app for offline from the app designer

In just a few clicks, you, the maker, can enable offline for your mobile users right in the maker portal. You can easily enable the app for offline to all users having access to the app (Default), or to a selected list of Users or Group of users (This option requires admin right).

Once enabled for offline, you will have to associate and offline profile to the app. The offline profile is the configuration of the data to download on the device. If you pick “New profile with current app data”, you will be able to quickly create a new offline profile precomputed by the system from the data configured in your app. You can also select an existing offline profile.

graphical user interface, application

You can update the offline profile anytime, and add filters or any optimization as recommended in the guidelines.

Offline first

With the mobile “offline first” experience enabled for your model-driven apps, your users will see better device performance, a more responsive app, and lower battery usage as apps make fewer connections to the server.

With “Offline first”, data presented in your app is consistent regardless of the network connectivity. There is no toggle anymore for users to switch from offline to online mode, so users will not forget to sync their changes back to the server. The app will do it automatically. (learn more about the difference between “offline first” and “classic offline”)

We are looking forward to your feedback

Your feedback will help us continue to build on and improve the capabilities of this feature. Share your feedback in comments or on our Power Apps community forum post.

Run Your Enterprise on Power Platform with New Enterprise Application Templates http://approjects.co.za/?big=en-us/power-platform/blog/power-apps/run-your-enterprise-on-power-platform-with-new-enterprise-application-templates/ Wed, 07 Jun 2023 15:00:00 +0000 Today, we are announcing the Public Preview of the new enterprise application templates for Power Platform -- a family of end-to-end solutions that simplify and automate core business processes for a range of common departmental use cases.

The post Run Your Enterprise on Power Platform with New Enterprise Application Templates appeared first on Microsoft Power Platform Blog.

]]>
As more and more customers invest in the full Power Platform, we’re seeing growth not only in citizen development, but also in the use of the platform by professionals modernizing core business processes across a range of departmental use cases.

Today, we’re helping accelerate that trend with the public preview release of new enterprise application templates for Power Platform — a family of end-to-end solutions that simplify and automate core business processes for a range of common departmental use cases. We’re starting with pre-built solutions for Procurement and Human Resources, and will expand to additional departmental use cases in the coming year.

These new templates are not training tools for beginners — they are designed to be accelerators for rapid transformation in production. They connect to enterprise systems like SAP and Microsoft Dataverse, showcase great user experiences, and are directly based on apps that are already successfully deployed inside Microsoft and other global customers. You can use these applications with existing Power Platform premium licenses, and they can be customized, configured and extended by your own technical team or system integrator partners.

Finance Templates

The first Power Platform application template is the SAP Procurement template, which improves the procurement process by simplifying vendor management, purchase requisitions, and purchase orders. It consists of procurement-focused Power Apps, corresponding Power Automate cloud flows, and the new Power Platform SAP Connector announced in December 2022.

This SAP Procurement template dramatically simplifies fundamental and time-intensive procurement processes (like adding vendors or creating a PO) for any customer running SAP. SAP is a complex ERP (financial system of record) often requiring significant training and expertise to complete basic tasks like creating a new vendor. Beginning all the way upstream at vendor management and ultimately finishing downstream with vendor payments, the SAP Procurement template enable customers to accelerate the PR/PO process, drive down days payable outstanding, reduce manual invoice reconciliations, and capture early payment discounts. By using a user-friendly, one-screen, modern Power App UI, Power Platform customers who also use the SAP ERP will reduce the time required to complete these procurement activities and increase employee satisfaction.

We will release additional capabilities for the SAP Procurement template including goods receipt, vendor invoices and vendor payments apps in the near future. Over time, we will add templates for additional finance and procurement processes. Learn more.

Human Resources Templates

The productivity of a company’s human capital has never been more important, due to tight labor markets and persistent inflation. Enterprises must empower their employees to do their best work in hybrid and mobile environments. Human Resources must be re-imagined and extended to meet the new challenges of a global, diverse and hybrid workforce. The Power Platform templates for Human Resources enable the modern CHRO or VP of Human Resources to recruit, manage, reward, and retain their top-performing talent in our constantly changing business environment.

This initial release is composed of three initial application templates for Human Resources: the Employee Kudos template which enables individual teammates to celebrate co-workers for their contributions, the Employee Awards & Recognitions template which enables employees & managers to nominate individuals for special awards, and the Employee Onboarding template which partners new employees with current employees and mentors to enable new employees to onboard and ramp as quickly as possible. The Employee Kudos template is available today. Awards & Recognitions and Employee Onboarding templates will be available in the near future.

Employee Kudos is one of the most used Power Apps solutions internally at Microsoft. Now every customer can leverage the best practices from Microsoft in their own company. We will continue to release more relevant templates to improve the employee experiences over the course of 2023 for the entire Hire-to-Retire process. Learn more.

What’s Next

The Power Platform will revolutionize the enterprise through employee empowerment with AI, rapid low code application development, and automation of time-intensive processes. We will be releasing additional application templates for other areas of the enterprise over time, including Sales, Marketing, IT, and Supply Chain.

How to Get Started

Customers and Systems Integration Partners can get started by accessing the template offers on Microsoft AppSource:

We are pleased to announce the Experimental Preview of the canvas offline feature for mobile application on iOS, Android and Windows devices. With this experimental feature, you can easily enable your Dataverse-centric canvas Power Apps for offline scenarios with simple switches and a simple canvas control. There is no need to use Power Fx SaveData/LoadData functions or manage offline data with complex collection schemes. Just build your app with normal Power Fx formulas and the offline feature handles all the complexity for you.

Offline is critical in today’s world, but difficult.

Mobility is crucial in our modern world. It is natural to access your data anytime and anywhere. You don’t want to have to think about it! But, to create an offline app for canvas today is hard. Makers have to implement complex logic within the app, download data (many tables with a large variety of sizes) on the device, synchronize and merge the data when you make changes on your device, decide whether the app should work against the local content or the server, and track network availability – which can be challenging in spotty connectivity areas.

With this new canvas offline feature, the built-in offline engine does all of the hard work for you!

Canvas offline apps are easy. Here’s why.

Offline with Power Apps Canvas is easy. First, enable your tables for offline. Then, enable the App for offline and you’re on your way. Here is what happens in the background: an offline enabled Power App first downloads all of the data it needs from the server. A customizable offline profile defines what data is downloaded to the device. Once your data is downloaded, your offline enabled canvas app works in an offline first approach – the app reads and writes data to a local store on the device whether or not the network is available. It doesn’t have to be connected to work. Then, your changes and changes on the server are regularly synchronized for you automatically in the background when the network is available.

High level architecture of canvas offline
Canvas offline overview

Limitations and Availability

 • Dataverse Files and Images are not yet supported for this feature. We know how important it is for users and we are doing our best to enable it as soon as possible.
 • Non-Dataverse connectors like Sharepoint are not supported in offline.

Power Apps developers can turn on the canvas offline feature in the Power Apps Studio by navigating to list of experimental features in settings dialog of the canvas app (Settings > Upcoming Features > Experimental) and toggling “Dataverse offline”.

The feature will roll out country by country from May 15th, 2023 to May 30th, 2023 in https://make.powerapps.com. It requires the latest version of the Power Apps mobile applications in the iOS, Android and Windows stores. Check out the prerequisites for more details.

We are looking forward to your feedback

Your feedback will help us make this new app even better. Share your feedback on our Power Apps forum.

You can also reach us by filling out this form and we’ll get back to you right away. We are particularly interested to understand how you are using offline in your apps.

Following on from the launch of the new look for model driven apps, we’re making the same modern controls available to canvas apps through an opt in preview. The new controls bring the following improvements:

 1. Modern – A focused and less cluttered design that supports richer interaction states and elevation, provides a higher usability baseline to build your low code apps from. These controls are based on Microsoft’s own Fluent design system which powers majority of Microsoft experiences across all products like Microsoft Teams, Word and more.
 1. Fast – Built for performance. We are making critical investments for this new suite to ensure your apps are fast and fluid.
 2. Accessible – These controls are WCAG 2.1 compliant with accessibility built in by default. We will provide a comprehensive set of properties for our developers to configure.
 1. Theming – Designed with theming in mind. Although not part of the initial launch, support for theming and per control styling is coming to the preview soon.

Here is a look at side by side comparison for the same app on new vs classic controls:

graphical user interface, application, Teams
graphical user interface, application

The preview will be updated frequently over the next few months. The goal is to provide a full suite of modern controls that are easy to style and fast. There are 13 new controls in the initial release.

13 controls to be released initially

We are far from done though. There are several awesome capabilities that we are going to be bringing over the coming weeks:

 1. Per control styling – color and font support that will work with the new theming system.
 1. New theming system – We are introducing a new theming system that will allow you to customize the look and feel of apps with greater ease and flexibility.
 1. More controls – Lots more controls are on the way. There will be more atomic elements like toggle, breadcrumb, and multi-select dropdown, as well as updated form, gallery, and new composed controls.
 1. Improved authoring & controls experience – We are making enhancements to the authoring experience, to make it much quicker and easier to build apps.

How to enable this feature?

Power Apps developers can turn on modern controls feature in Power Apps Studio by navigating to list of preview features in settings dialog.

Settings dialog to enable modern controls feature

After turning the feature on, developers can view the list of controls on insert pane in left panel.

To learn more about modern controls, please see – Overview of modern controls.

If you have any questions or feedback about the model controls for canvas apps, please reach out to us. You can provide feedback to improve controls within Power Apps Studio or use community forum to discuss with us and more community members.

We are pleased to announce that admin-configured maker welcome content is now available for the Power Apps maker portal. Today, admins rely on sending welcome emails, creating wikis, and setting up internal portals to educate makers. Since this information can be presented in so many different places, makers may miss important communication. With the maker welcome experience, admins can customize content that is displayed to users in the maker portal, proactively communicating information such as security policies, knowledge bases, the environment’s purpose, and support information to makers.

To use this feature, Managed Environments must be enabled. The settings panel for Managed Environments gives you the ability to customize Markdown content and define a URL for the welcome content:

graphical user interface, text, application

Once a welcome message is set up, makers will see a modal pop up in the maker portal when they enter an environment where this feature is enabled.

graphical user interface, application

Makers can choose to not see this again, and will be able to access it on the Learn page at any time.

Any updates admins make to the content will override the “do not see this again” checkbox and show the updated modal to makers. Because of this behavior, admins can also use the maker welcome content as a “push notification” system. Organizations can use it to provide updated information on policies, prompts to fill out surveys, or information on popular apps. The possibilities are endless!

We’d like to hear from you

To learn more about the maker welcome content, see our documentation here. If you have any feedback to share, please visit our community forum. We’d love to hear how you’re using the maker welcome content!
