Data visualization is widely used in business, government, and science as well as in personal context (for health and lifestyle) to make it easy for people to make sense of data. As more data becomes available and data-driven approaches become the norm, it is going to be increasingly important to be able to understand and interact with data visualization. However, it is extremely difficult for people who are blind or have other disabilities to learn and use interactive data visualization because current tools provide little support. Furthermore, the data visualization research community pays little attention to how to make data visualization more accessible.
This important equity issue restricts access to data and limits education and work opportunities, discourages participation in STEM and also limits the potential health and lifestyle benefits of personal data visualization.
This workshop will bring together data visualization researchers, accessibility researchers, as well as representatives from disability organizations to identify the current problems, to discuss possible solutions, and to create a roadmap for research in this important topic.
