Since its founding in 2008, the New England lab builds on Microsoft’s commitment to collaborate with the broader research community and pursues new, interdisciplinary areas of research that bring together core computer scientists and social scientists to understand, model, and enable computing and online experiences of the future. To mark the 10th anniversary of Microsoft Research New England, a one-day symposium was held, which comprised of themed panels focused on mathematics and theory, economics, big data and machine learning, fairness, and social platforms. During this event, we welcomed researchers, faculty, and students from the academic community to discuss the future and advancing the state of the art.

MATCH-UP 2017 was the fourth workshop in an interdisciplinary and international workshop series (opens in new tab) on matching under preferences. Matching problems with preferences occur in widespread applications such as the assignment of school-leavers to universities, junior doctors to hospitals, students to campus housing, children to schools, kidney transplant patients to donors and so on. The common thread is that individuals have preference lists over the possible outcomes and the task is to find a matching of the participants that is in some sense optimal with respect to these preferences. The remit of the workshop is to explore matching problems with preferences from the perspective of algorithms and complexity, discrete mathematics, combinatorial optimization, game theory, mechanism design and economics, and thus a key objective is to bring together the research communities of the related areas.

On February 13, 2014, we celebrated Butler Lampson’s 70 years with a day of exciting talks revisiting the history of computer systems and talking about issues of current concern. Butler spent many years, at Xerox PARC, at DEC, and now at Microsoft, transforming computer systems. His vision led to the first personal computer, to Internet protocols, to modern text processing systems and much more. He has won numerous awards for his work including the Turing Award in 1992.
