I am a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, Redmond, working in the Cryptography Group. I graduated with an MSc in mathematical physics from University of Helsinki and with a PhD in mathematics from UC Berkeley, after which I joined Microsoft in 2015. My interests today are broadly in applied cryptography, privacy, and security.

Much of my work in past years has been in homomorphic encryption and its applications. For example, I have built much of the Microsoft SEAL (opens in new tab) homomorphic encryption library and of the APSI (opens in new tab) private set intersection library, co-organizers of the HomomorphicEncryption.org (opens in new tab) standardization initiative. I am also particularly interested in privacy and compliance issues that arise from modern machine learning practices. I am working currently on practical systems for key distributions in E2EE communication, including key transparency systems. I am also working on reputation and accountability systems that can ensure reliable signals in adversarial environments.
