Holoportation™

Our earlier work

Holoportation was developed by Microsoft Research and presented at SIGGRAPH UIST in 2016.  The original paper describing the technology can be found here (opens in new tab). It remains to this day a seminal paper on real-time volumetric 3D capture and creation of water-tight meshes, including deformable surfaces.

The original Holoportation system consisted of 8 sets of novel camera pods. Each camera pod contained three 4k image sensors that captured the subject in IR (for depth) and RGB in order to create RGB+D streams that were fused together to create a cohesive mesh.
