Tutorial: Translating real-world data into evidence

Speaker: Darren Edge, Director of Societal Resilience, Microsoft Research Cambridge

The concepts of real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) emerged in the medical domain to differentiate observational data collected for some other purpose, such as electronic health or healthcare claims records, from experimental data collected through, and for the specific purpose of, a randomized controlled trial, such as a drug trial. However, the same concepts also apply to the noisy, biased, and sensitive nature of data collected in other real-world contexts, especially crisis situations where time is short, data scientists are scarce, and vulnerable populations are at risk. In this session, we will introduce a collection of tools developed by the Microsoft Research Societal Resilience group that enable domain experts to translate real-world data into evidence, respecting both the privacy of data subjects and the contingency of data insights, and informing evidence-based policy in problem areas ranging from healthcare to human trafficking.
