Position:<\/strong> Internship<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lab\/Location:<\/strong> Redmond<\/a>, New York City<\/a>, New England<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n This program is for candidates who are passionate about technology and offer diverse perspectives. To achieve our mission, we need to create a workforce that represents the rich diversity of our customers. The Microsoft Undergrad Internship Program is a tool to do just that. Our mission, \u201cTo unlock everyone\u2019s engineering talent so they can achieve more\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Microsoft Undergrad Internship Program is focused on developing talent and experience for careers in computing research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The program is a 12-week summer internship program specifically designed for advanced undergraduate students. It offers the opportunity to do state-of-the-art research in one of our US-based Microsoft Research Labs. You will work with our researchers and extended network of visiting faculty, postdoctoral researchers, data and applied scientists, engineers, designers, and doctoral students to make important contributions to new and ongoing research. One of the program\u2019s goals is to encourage participants to pursue advanced degrees in computing fields. Your on-the-job learning will be augmented with mentoring, community building, and networking opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the start of the internship program (~May):<\/p>\n\n\n\n We especially encourage applications from groups currently underrepresented in engineering and computer science, including those who self-identify as a woman, African American, Black, Hispanic, Latinx, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, person with a disability, and\/or LGBTQI+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside doctoral interns, and some of the world\u2019s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and are expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and are invited to contribute to the vibrant life of the Microsoft Research community. The program provides formal training as well as group project experience working alongside others. Participants will specialize in a field of their choice and will be teamed with\u00a0other researchers.<\/p>\n What are the different tracks?<\/strong><\/p>\n We offer three different intern tracks:<\/p>\n Research Intern Software Design Engineer<\/em> (RSDE): For passionate, creative, problem-solving individuals with a strong interest in software design and engineering. The SDE track focuses on designing and developing software solutions that support research initiatives. RSDE interns work closely with research teams to translate ideas into functional software tools and platforms.<\/p>\n Research Intern Program Manager<\/em>\u00a0(PM): For passionate, creative, problem-solving individuals with a strong interest in research and program management. The PM track is for those who want the hone their skills in leadership, organizing, planning, and strategy. Research PM interns work closely with research teams and other stakeholders to coordinate projects, ensuring timely execution, and keep teams aligned with broader goals.<\/p>\n Research Intern<\/em>: For passionate, creative, problem-solving individuals with a strong interest in research. The Research track focuses on exploring new ideas and pushing the boundaries of knowledge in a particular field. Individuals on this track contribute to academic or industry research projects by formulating hypotheses, conducting experiments, and potentially publishing or otherwise presenting their findings. This track is ideal for those who are contemplating pursuing a PhD.<\/p>\n I’ve heard Microsoft internships include an opportunity to interview for a full-time position, is that the case with this intern program?<\/strong><\/p>\n No. The MSR Undergraduate Research internship does not<\/em> include an interview.<\/p>\n What can I expect to accomplish during the program?<\/b><\/p>\n You will work in a small team to complete a research project through which you will gain exposure to the research development lifecycle.\u202fThe goal is to publish a paper based on your summer research in either a conference or journal, or\u00a0for the\u00a0research\u00a0to be\u00a0transferred to one of Microsoft\u2019s product teams.<\/p>\n Will I work with many groups during this experience, or focus on a specific goal in one group?<\/b><\/p>\n We want you to become very involved with your research, so we will assign you to a specific lab while you are here. This is the best way to make sure you have the opportunity to make a real contribution and gain valuable experience with the research funnel. Qualifications<\/h2>\r\nVirtual Internship: Participation in the Research Internship Program requires that you are physically located in the United States or Canada for the duration of the internship.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nCandidates must be junior or senior students enrolled in a bachelor\u2019s degree program majoring in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, information science or related major. By the start of the internship program (~May 2022) candidates must have at least two years\/multiples years of programming experience, completed courses in Calculus, Probability and Statistics and\/or Machine Learning OR demonstrated training in at least one social science methodology.\r\n\r\nWe especially encourage applications from groups currently underrepresented in engineering and computer science, including those who self-identify as a woman, African American, Black, Hispanic, Latinx, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, person with a disability, and\/or LGBTQI+.\r\n
