Prior to taking the President\u2019s office in April 2021, he was Executive Vice President in charge of finance and external relations for the university. He also served as the Director General of the Institute of Industrial Sciences (IIS) of the university from 2015 to 2018. He received his Ph.D. in engineering from UTokyo in 1993 and held research positions at IIS and RIKEN prior to becoming a professor of IIS in 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Fujii has served as an Executive Member (part-time) of the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation, Cabinet Office, Government of Japan since March 2021. He was also an advisor to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) from 2005 to 2007, co-director of LIMMS-CNRS\/IIS, a joint research laboratory between CNRS of France, and IIS, from 2007 to 2014, and the President of Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society (CBMS) from 2017 to 2019. Before joining Microsoft in 2010, he was at DARPA, where he established a new technology office that created operational capabilities in machine learning, data science, and computational social science. Prior to that, he was a professor and the head of the computer science department at Carnegie Mellon University. GPT-4 in particular shows impressive capabilities that go beyond direct medical knowledge, to include even support for patient engagement and medical research. This talk presents highlights of an intensive, year-long study exploring the benefits, limitations, and risks of GPT-4 in medicine. Our fundamental conclusion is that GPT-4 may represent the most important advance in computing technology, with potentially transformative impact on healthcare, and despite having received no specialized training in medicine. It emphasizes mutual respect for these differences. Our research group has been working on the development of AI systems that visualize cognitive characteristics to foster a neurodiverse society. We aim to constructively understand the neural modulations that lead to diverse perceptions and actions through neural networks and, furthermore, to promote self-awareness and reduce stigmatization by visualizing cognitive processes using robots and VR systems. In this talk, I will present a view to these advances from the lens of as a researcher tasked with responsible deployment of this technology in the real-world. I will discuss why we are at a phase transition in AI, both in terms of the immense potential for impact as well as rising risks that need to be mitigated by sociotechnical solutions. She is a board member of the Japan Deep Learning Association (JDLA). She is also a member of the Council for Social Principles of Human-centric AI, The Cabinet Office, which released \u201cSocial Principles of Human-Centric AI\u201d in 2019, and also a member of the Japanese government’s AI Strategy Council launched in May 2023. Internationally, she is an expert member of the working group on the Future of Work, GPAI (Global Partnership on AI). She obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. However, it has also underscored the need for appropriate design, development, deployment, and utilization of AI. Given that AI evolves and operates within society, there is a pressing need to establish comprehensive AI governance that encompasses AI developers, providers, users, public institutions, and the society at large. Emphasizing transparency and equity, the call for a shared framework that fosters innovation while mitigating risk is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To advance the responsible deployment of AI, it is imperative to delineate the responsible actors and formulate appropriate measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Particularly, in the continuum of processes spanning AI design, development, provisioning, and utilization, where various organizations and individuals may be involved, the locus of responsibility can become ambiguous. Consequently, in interorganizational transactions encompassing AI development to provisioning, ensuring appropriateness through contractual agreements is important. Furthermore, monitoring mechanisms should be established to ensure proper transactions. However, in transactions between AI providers and consumers, providers should not only take suitable preventive and corrective measures, but AI users can also leverage governance through disciplines other than regulations, such as market dynamics, investments, and reputation, by acquiring appropriate literacy. Additionally, it is advisable to consider establishing remedial measures such as compensation systems when accountability is unclear. Considering that the AI lifecycle extends beyond national, regional, and organizational boundaries, it is essential to promote discussions that enhance transparency regarding the responsibilities and measures of these stakeholders. Founded in 2022, Microsoft Research AI4Science focuses on the development of AI models to solve challenging scientific problems, with missions to accelerate breakthroughs in both fundamental and applied sciences, expanding the boundaries of our knowledge. We mainly work on subjects related to global pressing issues, such as public health and sustainability, corresponding to life sciences and materials sciences. I would like to take the opportunity to share recent progress in the development of AI technologies for research from microscopic molecular systems to macroscopic phenomena. Briefly, we have developed the following tools that will become available for researchers all over the world: (1) fast and accurate quantum chemistry simulation tools for molecular and materials calculations; (2) machine learning force field models to study materials dynamics and properties; (3) protein-drug complex structures and interaction predictions; (4) efficient dynamics simulations of biomolecules and generative AI models for protein functional states predictions; (5) protein optimization via large language models; and (6) macroscopic dynamics simulations for weather\/climate modeling.
