{"id":170127,"date":"2008-12-11T15:53:27","date_gmt":"2008-12-11T15:53:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/big\/"},"modified":"2019-08-19T15:36:06","modified_gmt":"2019-08-19T22:36:06","slug":"big","status":"publish","type":"msr-project","link":"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/big\/","title":{"rendered":"BIG"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"asset-content\">Building an automated operating system for large-scale data centers hosting third party applications.<\/div>\n<p>The BIG project\u00a0looked at the problem of completely automating the deployment and operations of hosted applications in large-scale data centers.\u00a0 One grand challenge for BIG was to answer the question: &#8220;How do I take data center with 100,000 servers and turn it into a running instance of a internet-scale service like HotMail (and keep it running) without a human touching the servers or networking equipment?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"en-usprojectsbigdefault\" class=\"page-content\">\n<p>The BIG project started in Microsoft Research in late summer 1999 and moved to the Windows Server Division in fall 2001.\u00a0 Microsoft&#8217;s <em>Dynamic Systems Initiative<\/em>, the <em>Dynamic Data Center<\/em>, and the <em>System Definition Model<\/em>\u00a0all came out of ideas started by the BIG project.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"a569a32a-602b-4b3c-abfa-d5b55fe5040d\" class=\"ImageBlock fn\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"Imagea569a32a-602b-4b3c-abfa-d5b55fe5040d\" src=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/uploads\/prod\/2016\/02\/\/big-2000_08_10_big_guys_651.jpg\" \/><span id=\"ImageCaptiona569a32a-602b-4b3c-abfa-d5b55fe5040d\" class=\"ImageCaptionCoreCss ImageCaption\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Building an automated operating system for large-scale data centers hosting third party applications.
