The research questions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Knowledge acquisition and reasoning<\/strong>: We deploy AI-powered machine readers to process all documents discovered by Bing crawler and extract scholarly entities and their relationships to form a knowledge base. To learn more and access our biweekly graph updates, please visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/microsoft-academic-graph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Academic Graph (MAG)<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/academic-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its online documents<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Semantic search and recommendation<\/strong>:\u00a0The website,<a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.microsoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Microsoft Academic (MA)<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>, uses the same intelligence in the machine readers to infer query intent and retrieve most relevant knowledge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/microsoft-academic-graph\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Academic Graph<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>. Like an personal assistant,\u00a0it can also recommend materials you might not know exist and alert you with the recent publication and late breaking news that you might find interesting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Importance assessment and ranking<\/strong>: as needed in reasoning and inferences, the importance of each entity is estimated and quantified. We study reinforcement learning algorithms that can effectively predict community judgments on all entities, using future citations as the delayed reward function.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most recent review of our work is published in this <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/fdata.2019.00045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journal paper by Frontiers<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1162\/qss_a_00021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this by QSS<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the MAG data, a REST API powering the Microsoft Academic website is also available as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/academic-knowledge\/\">Cognitive Service Lab project<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> for free-tier access only. There is no payment option to go beyond the throttling and quota limit. If you need faster responses and more calls than currently allowed, you are welcome to self-host the API.
