Building on top of this platform, we provide cloud-based APIs that enable real-time and rich interactions between humans and their physical environment. LiveSynergy enables a range of indoor applications such as location-based targeted advertising and presence detection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>News<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Jan. 2012: Our\u00a0LiveSynergy paper &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/publication\/design-and-evaluation-of-a-wireless-magnetic-based-proximity-detection-platform-for-indoor-applications\/\">Design and Evaluation of a Wireless Magnetic-based Proximity Detection Platform for Indoor Applications<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>&#8221; is accepted to <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"http:\/\/ipsn.acm.org\/2012\">ACM\/IEEE IPSN 2012<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> with a <strong>15% acceptance rate <\/strong>(22\/148)!<\/li>\n<li>Nov. 2011: Our LiveSynergy demo &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/publication\/demo-creating-interactive-virtual-zones-in-physical-space-with-magnetic-induction\/\">Creating Interactive Virtual Zones in Physical Space with Magnetic-Induction<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>&#8221; wins the <b>Best Demo Award<\/b> in <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"http:\/\/sensys.acm.org\/2011\/\">ACM SenSys 2011<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Manufactured 40 LivePulses and 25 LiveLinks for deployment.<\/li>\n<li>Performed experiments using LivePulses and LiveLinks in the Microsoft cafeterias to evaluate LiveSynergy for context-aware targeted-advertisement applications. We found LiveSynergy to be ideal for this type of applications due to its consistent and sharp zone boundaries.<\/li>\n<li>Created a Windows Phone 7.5 app, which offers context-aware and personalized advertisements and diet suggestions at a per-counter granularity.<\/li>\n<li>Created a web portal for commissioning and managing virtual objects (a large subset is based on LivePulse zones), with a GUI for creating custom triggers that link objects together using their events and methods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>About LiveSynergy<\/h2>\n<p>LiveSynergy provides reliable proximity sensing and open interactive abstractions<br \/>\nfor physical spaces and objects, to enable rich interactions between humans and their environment.\u00a0The following is our hardware platform:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1313px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"Image9678b83c-249a-4138-95de-b319f68ad250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/livesynergy-livepulselink.png\" width=\"1303\" height=\"613\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pulse (left) and Link (right)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Pulse<\/b> (left) consists of four primary hardware components: microcontroller (MCU) and radio, magnetic transmitter tuned at 125kHz, energy metering, and a mechanical relay for actuation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Link<\/b> (right) is a mobile device carried by humans to receive and decode the IDs from dynamic magnetic fields transmitted by Pulses.<\/p>\n<p>Building on top of this\u00a0magnetic-based wireless proximity detection platform, we provide cloud-based APIs that enable real-time and rich interactions between humans and their physical environment, as seen in the system architecture below.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1126px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"Imageb9da22ce-c432-452c-9515-9f5b818b5637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/livesynergy-sysarch.png\" width=\"1116\" height=\"629\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">End-to-end system architecture includes three main components: the hardware platform for detecting when humans enter and exit cafeteria counters; a networking and data representation layer enabling communication among counters, services in the cloud, and app clients; and an application layer consisting of a mobile application for providing feedback and visualization.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>LiveSynergy enables a range of indoor applications such as location-based targeted advertising and presence detection. Take the location-based targeted advertising as an example,\u00a0a <strong>Pulse<\/strong>, installed at the Teppanyaki counter is projecting a proximity zone of 5m radius. <strong>Links<\/strong> carried by diners in their pockets detect this zone as they enter.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"a8568a32-27b9-4f39-b987-924992e1b2e3\" class=\"ImageBlock fn\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"Imagea8568a32-27b9-4f39-b987-924992e1b2e3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/livesynergy-cafe.png\" \/><span id=\"ImageCaptiona8568a32-27b9-4f39-b987-924992e1b2e3\" class=\"ImageCaptionCoreCss ImageCaption\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When his <strong>Link<\/strong> detects the Pulse ID of the entrance and forward to the server, our web service sends a notification message to his mobile phone. The phone displays a notification at the top of the screen without interrupting the foreground application (Internet Explorer). Clicking the notification opens the main screen of our mobile application with the menu and promotional items. At the \u201cJapanese counter\u201d, the web service pushes counter-specific coupons (tuna sashimi). And more interesting location-based application can be built reliably on top of our platform.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1447px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"Imaged9482e82-f7c8-4d43-b972-35f079255c73\" src=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/livesynergy-wp_series.png\" width=\"1437\" height=\"704\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The diners receive the notification upon entering the caf\u00e9, which do not interrupt the current web browsing. After clicking the notification, today&#8217;s menu is available from a RESTful server, so diners can have a more convenient way to order.
