We<br \/>\nhave developed an advanced smoothing system that a small<br \/>\npilot study indicates significantly improves quality. We<br \/>\nrepresent speech as being composed of a number of frames,<br \/>\nwhere each frame can be synthesized from a parameter vector.<br \/>\nEach frame is represented by a state in an HMM, where the<br \/>\noutput distribution of each state is a Gaussian random vector<br \/>\nconsisting of x and Dx. The set of vectors that maximizes the<br \/>\nHMM probability is the representation of the smoothed speech<br \/>\noutput. This technique follows our traditional goal of<br \/>\ndeveloping methods whose parameters are automatically<br \/>\nlearned from data with minimal human intervention.
