Byzantine fault-tolerant (BFT) replication has enjoyed a
\nseries of performance improvements, but remains costly
\ndue to its replicated work. We eliminate this cost for
\nread-mostly workloads through Prophecy, a system that
\ninterposes itself between clients and any replicated service.
\nAt Prophecy\u2019s core is a trusted sketcher component,
\ndesigned to extend the semi-trusted load balancer
\nthat mediates access to an Internet service. The sketcher
\nperforms fast, load-balanced reads when results are historically
\nconsistent, and slow, replicated reads otherwise.
\nDespite its simplicity, Prophecy provides a new form of
\nconsistency called delay-once consistency. Along the
\nway, we derive a distributed variant of Prophecy that
\nachieves the same consistency but without any trusted
\ncomponents.
\nA prototype implementation demonstrates Prophecy\u2019s
\nhigh throughput compared to BFT systems. We also describe
\nand evaluate Prophecy\u2019s ability to scale-out to support
\nlarge replica groups or multiple replica groups. As
\nProphecy is most effective when state updates are rare,
\nwe finally present a measurement study of popular websites
