Innovation in the network is notoriously difficult due to the
\nneed to support legacy applications. We argue that this difficulty
\nstems from the API used to access the network. The
\nubiquitous Sockets API lets applications choose from a number
\nof communication mechanisms, but binds them tightly
\nto their chosen mechanism (e.g. specifying a destination using
\nIPv4). Applications must therefore be modified in order
\nto benefit from new network technologies. To address
\nthis problem, we propose a new communication API called
\nNetAPI that lets applications specify their communication
\nintents without binding to particular network mechanisms,
\nenabling evolution below the API. We have built a NetAPI
\nprototype for the iPhone, and use it to show that we can add
\ndisconnection tolerance, content shaping and power saving
