{"id":606990,"date":"2019-09-03T16:35:55","date_gmt":"2019-09-03T23:35:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/?post_type=msr-research-item&#038;p=606990"},"modified":"2019-09-03T18:34:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-04T01:34:58","slug":"formal-verification-of-workflow-policies-for-smart-contracts-in-azure-blockchain","status":"publish","type":"msr-research-item","link":"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/publication\/formal-verification-of-workflow-policies-for-smart-contracts-in-azure-blockchain\/","title":{"rendered":"Formal Verification of Workflow Policies for Smart Contracts in Azure Blockchain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ensuring correctness of smart contracts is paramount to ensuring trust in\u00a0 blockchain-based systems.<br \/>\nThis paper studies the safety and security of smart contracts in the <em>Azure Blockchain Workbench<\/em>, an enterprise Blockchain-as-a-Service offering from Microsoft.<br \/>\nIn particular, we formalize <em>semantic conformance<\/em> of smart contracts against a state machine workflow with access-control policy and propose an approach to reducing semantic conformance checking to safety\u00a0 verification using program instrumentation.<br \/>\nWe develop a new Solidity program verifier <em>VeriSol<\/em> that is based on translation to Boogie, and have applied it to analyze <em>all<\/em> application contracts shipped with the Azure Blockchain Workbench and found previously unknown bugs in these published smart contracts.<br \/>\nAfter fixing these bugs, <em>VeriSol<\/em> was able to successfully perform full verification for all of these contracts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ensuring correctness of smart contracts is paramount to ensuring trust in\u00a0 blockchain-based systems.
