Yet manually digitized documents are often of uneven quality, while web pages and electronic documents can come with multiple layouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/document-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Document AI technology<\/a> is designed to efficiently extract, organize and analyze the information in different documents, freeing employees and companies from this repetitive and tedious work. The results are automated extraction, classification and understanding of information with rich typesetting formats from webpages, digital-born documents, or scanned documents, along with lower costs and reduced errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft Research Asia has been studying Document AI since 2019, working at the intersection of natural language processing and computer vision and using deep learning techniques. In their most recent work, researchers have developed new skills for Document AI, unveiled industry-leading models, and begun developing general-purpose and unified frameworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-1 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-outline is-style-outline--2397e18ca4f0610d99866db2c2b9675c\"><a data-bi-type=\"button\" class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/lab\/microsoft-research-asia\/articles\/revolutionizing-document-ai-with-multimodal-document-foundation-models-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the blog<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"tapping-into-large-language-models-with-microsofts-turing-academic-program\">Tapping into Large Language Models with Microsoft\u2019s Turing Academic Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Large language models (LLMs) deliver impressive performance with difficult tasks and across various applications. As AI researchers explore LLMs, many questions persist. Answering these questions will require a range of different perspectives and proficiencies from experts from industry, research, and government.<br>&nbsp;<br>To better understand opportunities and challenges with LLMs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/horvitz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eric Horvitz<\/a>, Microsoft\u2019s Chief Scientific Officer, moderated a panel discussion \u201c<a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0jhg87SOSYE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Towards a Healthy Research Ecosystem for Large Language Models<\/a>.\u201d Panelists included Ahmed Awadallah (Microsoft Research), <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/beta.nsf.gov\/tip\/leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erwin Gianchandani<\/a> (National Science Foundation), <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" href=\"https:\/\/cs.stanford.edu\/~pliang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Percy Liang<\/a> (Stanford University), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/satiwary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saurabh Tiwary<\/a> (Microsoft Turing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key theme of the panel was the need to expand access to LLMs, which requires large amounts of data and computing resources.
