Whether it is predicting <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/news\/features\/rothschild-092612.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">political results<\/a>, supercharging <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/30\/technology\/microsoft-renews-relevance-with-machine-learning-technology.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">your Excel spreadsheets<\/a>, helping <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/community\/site_blogs\/b\/searchquality\/archive\/2012\/08\/20\/bing-search-quality-insights-minimizing-answer-defects.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">map queries to intent<\/a> in Search, or even <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/translation\/archive\/2012\/07\/11\/announcing-the-microsoft-translator-hub-for-commercial-use.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">customizing a translation engine<\/a> to best fit your content &ndash; these research areas are playing a starring role in transforming technology and productivity.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks back, at the 14th annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msra.cn\/21ccc\/flash\/xsjs_en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Computing in the 21st Century Conference<\/a>, attendees saw a glimpse of where else these technologies are taking us &ndash; and loved it. Rick Rashid, who heads up Microsoft Research worldwide, went up on stage and in the span of eight sentences, got the 2000+ strong crowd up on their feet and cheering. It was a moment where <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clarke's_three_laws\" target=\"_blank\">technology was indistinguishable from magic<\/a> &ndash; and one that would spur science fiction writers to start thinking of bigger challenges for researchers to tackle \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Watch the video to see for yourself:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A combination of powerful technologies were employed to make this amazing demonstration possible: Deep Neural Network based processing combined with high performance computing allowed a significant jump in accuracy of speech recognition. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/translator\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Translator technology<\/a> that you use each day was <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/b\/translation\/archive\/2012\/07\/11\/announcing-the-microsoft-translator-hub-for-commercial-use.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">customized<\/a> to best fit Rick&rsquo;s speech content. New speech synthesis technology that allows personalization of acoustic characteristics was able to create &ldquo;Rick&rsquo;s voice&rdquo; in a language he does not speak. You can read Rick&rsquo;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/next\/archive\/2012\/11\/08\/microsoft-research-shows-a-promising-new-breakthrough-in-speech-translation-technology.aspx#.UKAhgWa6aTX\" target=\"_blank\">blog post here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these technologies are already available today, especially the industry-leading translation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/translator\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Translator<\/a>) with customization capabilities (<a href=\"http:\/\/hub.microsofttranslator.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Translator Hub<\/a>). If you are a Windows Phone user, you have been enjoying the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windowsphone.com\/en-US\/apps\/2cb7cda1-17d8-df11-a844-00237de2db9e\" target=\"_blank\">most innovative translation app<\/a> on any phone for over a year now, which includes an early speech translation experience that has been tuned for travel situations. The audio output that you hear on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/translator?ref=MsftMT\" target=\"_blank\">Bing Translator<\/a> website uses some of the newer speech synthesis engines coming out of our Speech research. Deep-Neural-Net research is also behind our audio\/video indexing service &ndash; <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/projects\/mavis\/\" target=\"_blank\">MAVIS<\/a>, which is available commercially.<\/p>\n<p>The excitement that has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/microsofts-translation-breakthrough-speak-and-hear-your-voice-in-chinese-7000007166\/?s_cid=e539\" target=\"_blank\">rippling<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-20266427\" target=\"_blank\">across<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/whatsnext.blogs.cnn.com\/2012\/11\/09\/microsoft-computer-speaks-chinese-for-you-in-your-own-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\">the<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/11\/09\/microsoft-voice-translator_n_2102158.html\" target=\"_blank\">web<\/a> in response to this demonstration is an indicator of how much everyone wants to experience this &lsquo;magic&rsquo;.
