Doing these meeting back-to-back is much easier now than last year due to these two companies <a title=\"CNET article\" href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/Dell+opts+for+AMDs+Opteron\/2100-1006_3-6074059.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working together<\/a>. The drive on IH\u00a035\u00a0between the two headquarters is only\u00a035 minutes\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0on a good day I&#8217;m told.<\/p>\n<p>One of the entertaining moments in Austin was the cab ride after dinner. Now, this isn&#8217;t the first time I&#8217;ve ridden with a <a title=\"HPC cab driver\" href=\"\/windowsserver\/2006\/11\/14\/it-forum-virtual-video-stars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technically astute cab<\/a> driver; but it is the first cab driver that I&#8217;ve seen with a mounted tablet PC running Windows Vista. Our driver tracked fares with an app and ink, and ran &#8220;Street &amp; Trips&#8221; to find best routes and destinations. My colleagues and I were impressed. Here&#8217;s a couple photos.<\/p>\n<p>The next entertaining moment came at AMD headquarters. We were talking Longhorn Server, virtualization and\u00a0<a title=\"CNET article on Barcelona\" href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/Quad-core+Opteron+faster+at+virtualization,+AMD+says\/2100-1006_3-6124515.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barcelona<\/a>, the\u00a0forthcoming AMD quad-core processor. AMD&#8217;s HQ is located in the farm lands. Last time I was there, I was on a conference call in the parking lot, 20 yards away from a head of cattle in a holding pen. But this time, after a productive meeting talking about Longhorn, I was driving out of the parking lot when I saw the real deal. A Longhorn steer grazing right near the parking lot &#8230; away from his friends. Given the focus of the meeting, I thought it was good karma to snap a photo here, too (from the car in case of a quick getaway).<\/p>\n<p>Too bad I didn&#8217;t run into\u00a0the one (University of Texas)\u00a0Longhorn I really\u00a0wanted to meet, <a title=\"AP player of the year\" href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/ncb\/news\/story?id=2818859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Durant<\/a>. Turns out he was\u00a0<a title=\"Seattle PI\" href=\"http:\/\/seattlepi.nwsource.com\/basketball\/310261_sonx04.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">watching the Spurs<\/a> beat up the Sonics in San Antonio.\u00a0\u00a0The way the Sonics are losing this year,\u00a0Durant may be coming to Seattle next year to turn the team around.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I spent Monday and Tuesday in Austin, TX for meetings with counterparts at Dell and AMD.
