EMC will retain ownership of the remaining shares of VMware, and has no intention of spinning out or otherwise divesting this ownership interest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As today&#8217;s <a title=\"eWeek article with Tucci\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/article2\/0%2C1895%2C2091350%2C00.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eWeek article<\/a> suggests, EMC shareholders\u00a0[I&#8217;m not one of them]\u00a0were looking for greater returns. EMC&#8217;s CEO explains more of the thinking with <a title=\"Fortune article\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2007\/02\/07\/magazines\/fortune\/Tucci_EMC.fortune\/index.htm?source=yahoo_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fortune<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my initial thoughts on this news:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diane Green and orginal VMware execs\u00a0left money on the table, and this IPO will put &#8216;lost&#8217; money in their pocket. VMware&#8217;s 2006 sales grew 83% to $709 million; EMC bought the it in 2003 for $635 million.<\/li>\n<li>VMware&#8217;s quarterly figures (and operations)\u00a0will be more transparent for all. This should cause <a title=\"eWeek article on IDC forum\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/article2\/0,1895,2091057,00.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDC to amend its elevated market projections<\/a>. And the IPO comes at a time when VMware faces growing\u00a0competition from open source technologies and Microsoft &#8211; raising interest in VMware&#8217;s 4th public quarter (first full year) results.<\/li>\n<li>Many believe VMware&#8217;s future revenue\/success lies in management tools. With virtualization\u00a0included as part of the major x86 operating systems and Itanium-based OSes, that\u00a0will reduce the units\/margins that VMware and distributors receive on ESX Server. In parallel,\u00a0securing and managing\u00a0VMs\u00a0becomes the task\u00a0at hand. In this situation, VMware&#8217;s management tools will compete with\u00a0HP OpenView, IBM Tivoli, Microsoft\u00a0Operations Manager, BMC Performance Manager and CA UniCenter.\u00a0\u00a0All of whom offer and are building tools to manage both physical and virtual environments. So there&#8217;s three options: (1)\u00a0VMware builds\/buys its own\u00a0tool with the excess equity from the IPO; (2)\u00a0they license V-Motion to an established management vendor; (3) they open source all\/parts of V-Motion, kinda like Sun did with Solaris.<\/li>\n<li>The IPO helps VMware fund the OS revolt and prove history wrong. Will everything be virtualized in 5 years? Doubt it &#8211; more likely 50%-75% of workloads. Still <a title=\"Byte and Switch\" href=\"http:\/\/www.byteandswitch.com\/document.asp?doc_id=116578&amp;WT.svl=news1_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plenty of issues<\/a> to resolve here.<\/li>\n<li>EMC&#8217;s culture was so much different than VMware&#8217;s culture, to the point that each had different badges. The IPO will help legitimize the wall between the two and likely help both companies&#8217; employees.<\/li>\n<li>Storage virtualization. I had expected EMC&#8217;s acquisition of VMware to drive serious advances here. But it never materialized. Maybe the IPO will help change this.<\/li>\n<li>The sponsorship costs, and size of, VMworld 2007\u00a0are sure to increase. Let&#8217;s just hope there are more latte\/coffee carts in San Francisco than there were in LA. And I&#8217;m sure our booth traffic will increase, too.
