Liu Dahua (柳大华): The Oriental Computer of Xiangqi
Born on March 3, 1950, in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, Liu Dahua has become a legend in the world of Xiangqi (Chinese Chess). His journey from a young enthusiast to a Grandmaster is a tale of dedication, brilliance, and unparalleled memory.
Rising Through the Ranks
Under the influence of his brother and the tutelage of GM Li Yiting, Liu's talent blossomed early. By 13, he had already claimed the youth Xiangqi championship in Hubei province. His ascent in the Chinese National Xiangqi Singles Tournament was meteoric, progressing from third place in 1974 to eventually dethroning the renowned Hu Ronghua in 1980.
Achievements That Astound
Liu's list of accomplishments is nothing short of impressive:
Two-time winner of the Chinese National Xiangqi Singles Tournament (1980-1981)
Twice crowned champion of the prestigious Five Rams Cup (1981, 1983)
Three-time victor of the Yinli Cup (1991, 1993, 1997)
Key player in multiple Asian Xiangqi Team Championships
The Human Computer
Liu's nickname, "Oriental Computer," is well-earned. His memory and analytical skills are legendary, exemplified by his blind chess records. In 1988, he played against 15 opponents simultaneously while blindfolded, later surpassing his own record in 1995 by facing 19 opponents (9 wins, 8 draws, 2 losses). This incredible feat stood unbroken for 15 years.
A Mind Like No Other
Perhaps the most astonishing display of Liu's memory occurred in 1996. After witnessing a brilliant move in a tournament match, Liu not only analyzed it in depth but also recalled an identical move from a game played 30 years earlier, setting up the board from memory to demonstrate the similarity. Even his fellow Grandmasters were left in awe.
Legacy and Continued Influence
Today, Liu Dahua remains an active and respected figure in the Xiangqi community. His aggressive playstyle, particularly in mid-game situations, continues to inspire players worldwide. Through his ongoing contributions, including explanatory videos on opening strategies, Liu ensures that his vast knowledge and passion for Xiangqi are passed on to future generations.
