Investigation of HDR vs. tone-mapped SDR

High dynamic range (HDR) content contains deep shadows and bright highlights that cannot be represented on a standard video display.

Computer displays are not usually able to achieve the brightness, contrast, or dynamic range needed to display these images with fidelity.

In this project, we constructed a high-dynamic-range (HDR) display using a laptop display panel and a projector, to achieve high brightness and high contrast.

User studies showed that for a selection of HDR images, in a dark environment, a combination of luminance and chroma tone mapping applied to the input signal to a standard-dynamic-range (SDR) display produced a similar visual effect to that of an HDR display.

The results were published at the Society for Information Display’s annual conference.
