Advancing sustainability

We're working to responsibly build the AI future through innovation, partnership, and investment to help turn sustainability ambition into durable impact.

Our commitments

At Microsoft, the path from sustainability ambition to operational execution has relied on applying technology and advancing cross-cutting interventions that support progress toward our commitments while supporting core elements of our business. These commitments continue to guide our approach.

Carbon negative

Become carbon negative by 2030 by reducing emissions across our operations and value chain, and removing more carbon than we emit.

Zero waste

Become zero waste by 2030 by reducing waste at the source, keeping products and materials in use longer, and recovering what remains.

Water positive

Become water positive by 2030 by reducing water use, replenishing more than we withdraw, expanding access to water and sanitation, and supporting stronger water stewardship.

Protect and preserve ecosystems

Protect ecosystems by applying data and digital technologies and protecting more land than we use by 2025.

Sustainable and connected communities

By closing connectivity gaps, we enable communities to participate in the AI economy. Through partnerships, we deliver reliable internet and essential technologies that open doors to learning, innovation, and growth.

Our progress

When we announced our climate commitments in 2020, we also pledged to be accountable and transparent about our progress. Across carbon, water, waste, and ecosystems, we track our results, share learnings, and refine our approach.
100 percent match.

Carbon-free renewable energy matched

We matched 100% of our annual global electricity consumption with renewable energy.
More than 14.2 million cubic meters.

Water replenished

We replenished more than 14.2 million cubic meters of water, surpassing our global water withdrawals for the first time.
92 percent reuse & recycling rate.

Waste avoided

We achieved a 92% reuse and recycling rate for servers and components for all cloud hardware, exceeding our 90% target for the second year in a row.
More than 150,000 trees planted.

Ecosystems protected

We partnered with local nonprofits, municipalities, and volunteers to plant over 150,000 native trees to contribute to habitat creation, while applying digital technologies to support stronger ecosystems.

Climate Innovation Fund

Through our $1 billion Climate Innovation Fund, we invest in innovative technologies and solutions that accelerate progress toward a sustainable future. We focus on underfunded markets and areas with the greatest climate impact, helping ensure that the benefits of a more sustainable economy are broadly shared.

"The systems we build to support the future must also support the long-term health of the planet and the communities we serve. Our experience to date makes clear that this is possible, but only with greater discipline, partnership, and a willingness to learn and adapt as conditions evolve."

—Melanie Nakagawa, Corporate Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer, Microsoft
