Principal Research Science Manager

About

Anthony Ortiz is a Principal Research Science Manager at the Microsoft AI for Good Research Lab led by Juan Lavista Ferres (opens in new tab). His work focuses on tackling large scale problems in medical imaging, remote sensing, machine learning, and computer vision in support of Microsoft’s AI for Earth and AI for Health initiatives.

Anthony received a Bachelor of Science in Telematics Engineering (Electrical and Computing Engineering equivalent) at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) (opens in new tab), Dominican Republic with Summa Cum Laude distinction. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) where he was advised by Dr. Olac Fuentes (opens in new tab) and Dr. Christopher Kiekintveld (opens in new tab). During his Ph.D., Anthony spent several months at Mila (opens in new tab) in Montreal working under the guidance of professor Yoshua Bengio (opens in new tab). He also spent time at Microsoft Research (opens in new tab) as an AI Research Intern working with Nebojsa Jojic (opens in new tab) and Dan Morris (opens in new tab), Orbital Insight (opens in new tab), and USC Institute for Creative Technologies (opens in new tab).  His research interest lies in the intersection between machine learning, computer vision, and remote sensing with particular interest in the application of artificial intelligence to solve problems affecting society. He is also interested in self-supervised learning, conditional computation, Out of Distribution (OOD) generalization, and anything related to deep neural networks.
