Applied Research Scientist II

About

Gilles Hacheme is an Applied Research Scientist II in the Microsoft AI for Good Research Lab (opens in new tab). His work leverages computer vision, remote sensing, and statistics to tackle societal problems such as climate change and disaster response.

Before joining Microsoft, he completed his PhD at Aix-Marseille University in Econometrics and Machine Learning (ML). His PhD research focused on:

  1. applying ML to solve problems in economics;
  2. using classical econometric tools to achieve interpretable models;
  3. and using online data (obtained through APIs or web scraping) to answer economic questions.

Gilles has had a strong interest in using AI to solve African-related problems, more particularly:

  1. using AI to break language barriers in Africa: the reason he has been an active member of the Masakhane NLP (opens in new tab) research community since 2020;
  2. using AI to increase inclusivity: that’s why he co-founded Ai4Innov, a non-profit organization where he works on projects like Inclusive Fashion AI (opens in new tab) (InFashAI).

His research interest is mainly building impactful machine learning based solutions under low-resource settings by leveraging transfer and active learning.
