About

Hi! I’m Jenn Wortman Vaughan (opens in new tab), a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, NYC.

I work on responsible AI (opens in new tab)—including transparency, interpretability, fairness, and evaluations of AI systems—as part of Microsoft’s FATE group (opens in new tab).  My research background is in machine learning and algorithmic economics, but these days I frequently incorporate techniques from HCI into my research to better understand the interaction between people and AI systems.

I came to MSR in 2012 from UCLA, where I was an assistant professor in the computer science department. I completed my Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 2009, and subsequently spent a year as a Computing Innovation Fellow at Harvard. I am the recipient of Penn’s 2009 Rubinoff dissertation award for innovative applications of computer technology, a National Science Foundation CAREER award, a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and a variety of best paper awards. I co-founded the Annual Workshop for Women in Machine Learning (WiML), which has been held each year since 2006, recently served as Program Co-chair of NeurIPS 2021, and am serving as Program Co-chair of FAccT 2025.

I don’t update this profile regularly, so the publications and projects you see may be out of date. See my website (opens in new tab) for more up-to-date information and a full publication list (opens in new tab). You can also occasionally find me on Twitter (opens in new tab) and Bluesky (opens in new tab).
