About
Nick is an Applied Scientist in the Sociotechnical Alignment Center (STAC) at Microsoft Research. He is broadly interested in improving the evaluation and measurement of AI-based systems, so that researchers and practitioners can better understand these systems’ capabilities and mitigate their potential risks. Drawing on measurement theory in the social sciences, Nick’s research investigates ways to integrate generative large language models (LLMs) effectively and responsibly into applied research, with a special focus on automated annotation techniques.
Nick has a MA in Statistics from The Wharton School and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Microsoft Research, Nick worked on integrating LLMs into products and developing predictive algorithms for targeted advertising and private equity firms.
