About
I’m Nicolas Bruno (Nico) and I am originally from Argentina. I got my PhD degree from Columbia University in 2003 working on statistics for query optimization (opens in new tab). I worked at Microsoft Research on self tuning databases (opens in new tab) (2002), led the Cosmos/Scope (opens in new tab) query optimizer team at Microsoft Bing (2010), served as the QO technical lead for the Spanner system (opens in new tab) at Google (2014), worked in the query optimization space (opens in new tab) in the Microsoft Azure Data organization (2018), and had short stints at AWS (working on Athena (opens in new tab) and Redshift), Snowflake, and Google (2021). Since 2023, I’m back at Microsoft working in the Gray Systems Lab, bridging research and development around query optimization and processing.
