About

I’m a Computational Social Scientist and Geographer who specializes measuring complex social phemonena (online and in the real world) and mobilizing that data to build insights, innovative products, and/or policies.

Prior to Microsoft I worked at Apple Maps and held faculty positions at Brown, Columbia, and the University of Colorado where I was tenured in Geography and Information Science and served as the Univerity’s inagural Chief Data Officer.  My writing and research has focused on the use of data and analytics in governance and disaster response, measuring complex social landscapes, and more recently information retreival.  I have served as a scientifc advisor to the US Department of Commerce, Department of Interior, and Oak Ridge National Labs (US Department of Energy).  My work has recieved awards for innovation and impact from the American Statistical Association and the American Association of Geographers.  I won the Breheny Prize for innovations in Ubran Analytics and City Science.
