Rick Szeliski

About

Richard Szeliski is an Affiliate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington (opens in new tab), a member of the NAE (opens in new tab), and a Fellow of the ACM (opens in new tab) and IEEE (opens in new tab).  Dr. Szeliski has done pioneering research in the fields of Bayesian methods for computer vision, image-based modeling and rendering, and computational photography, which lie at the intersection of computer vision and computer graphics.

Dr. Szeliski received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University (opens in new tab) in 1988 and worked at the Cambridge Research Lab of Digital Equipment Corporation for six years before joining Microsoft Research in 1995.

During his 20 year career at Microsoft Research he led the Interactive Visual Media group (opens in new tab) and earned the title of distinguished engineer due to his many accomplishments and contributions during his time there. His research on Photo Tourism (opens in new tab), (opens in new tab)Photosynth (opens in new tab), and Hyperlapse (opens in new tab) are exciting examples of the promise of large-scale image and video-based rendering.

Dr. Szeliski has published over 180 research papers in computer vision, computer graphics, neural nets, and numerical analysis, as well as the books Computer Vision: Algorithms and Applications and Bayesian Modeling of Uncertainty in Low-Level Vision. He was a Program Committee Chair for CVPR’2013 and ICCV’2003, served as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (opens in new tab) and on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Computer Vision (opens in new tab), and was a Founding Editor of Foundations and Trends in Computer Graphics and Vision (opens in new tab).
