Tarleton Gillespie, principal researcher at Microsoft Research, affiliated associate professor in the departments of Communication and Information Science at Cornell University, and author of Custodians of the Internet: Platforms, Content Moderation, and the Hidden Decisions That Shape Social Media, spoke about the irreconcilable contradiction for social media platforms, which promise an open space for participation and community but impose rules of some kind.
