Project Janus: xApp using Dynamic Service Models (MWC 2024)

This video presents a collaborative demonstration by Microsoft, Amdocs, and Juniper, showcasing how RIC xApps, specifically Amdocs’ massive MIMO xApp, can alleviate mobile network coverage issues. Microsoft’s dynamic E2 service models enable xApp developers to collect detailed RAN telemetry, which is supported by Juniper’s Near Real Time RIC. The demo reveals how Juniper’s RIC facilitates Janus telemetry collection. Amdocs’ xApp then leverages the new telemetry and optimizes network coverage using smart beamforming. Microsoft contributes by implementing eBPF codelets to gather in-depth physical layer data, enhancing the xApp’s decision-making process. The use case involves a network of 12 sites with Amdocs xApp successfully identifying and addressing interference and coverage challenges. The results, including the health of solution components like Dynamic E2 Service Models, can be monitored on Amdocs Network Platform for Operations. This successful demonstration underscores the potential for xApp-driven improvements in network coverage and invites further exploration of use cases by xApp vendors.
