For example, when used with a music app like djay Pro, you can use Surface Dial to nudge settings on the mixer, the crossfader, and effects. Simply touch what you want to adjust on the screen with one hand, then use Surface Dial in the other hand to make more precise adjustments of the settings.

When used with Surface Studio, Surface Pro, and Surface Book 2, you can place Surface Dial directly on the screen to unlock additional capabilities. You can then use Surface Dial to move over your music library, scroll through your music collection, and load tracks. You can also place Surface Dial directly over the area of your DJ software where you control music tracks. The radial menu appears, and you can rotate Surface Dial to navigate different modes, such as scrub, scratch, filter, and loop.

Set up Surface Dial

To get started with Surface Dial:

  1. Remove the protective film from your Surface Dial.
  2. Open the battery compartment, which is located on the bottom of your Surface Dial.
  3. Make sure there are two AAA batteries inside.
  4. Remove the battery tab.
  5. Press and hold the Pair button next to the batteries for 5 - 7 seconds, then release it. The light flashes white when Surface Dial is in pairing mode.
  6. From your Surface, select Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  7. Turn on Bluetooth.
  8. Select Add device > Bluetooth > Surface Dial > Done.

Become familiar with Surface Dial

Here are a few things you can do with Surface Dial right out of the box and after completing initial setup:

  • Volume. Rotate left to turn it down or right to turn it up. Click to mute and unmute.
  • Scroll. Rotate left to scroll up, or right to scroll down.
  • Zoom. In Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, rotate left to zoom out, or right to zoom in. Click to fit to screen.
  • Undo. Rotate left to step through the undo history, or right to step through the redo history. Click to undo a single action.
  • Brightness. Rotate left to make the display less bright, or right to make it brighter.

You can also customize aspects of your Surface Dial experience, including default tools, vibration (also known as haptic feedback), and hand setting. To customize settings:

  1. Select Settings > Devices > Wheel.
  2. Specify your preferred settings.
  3. Select the Add button (+) to add a new tool. Several options are available, from increasing and lowering volume and brightness to zooming and scrolling to switching apps.
