In the first of a new series of Spotlight Conversations exploring the uses of AI in business, we speak with Mayank Bhargava, chief information and digital officer at Fortis Healthcare. He describes his role at Fortis as, “[looking] at the digital technologies and see how we actually improve the overall patient experience, the clinicians experience, and deliver much better care for our patients.”
He’s joined by Shrikant Kothari, head of IT for Microsoft India, who leads an exploration of the opportunities, potential pitfalls, and sourcing challenges that face businesses as they begin to take advantage of advances in AI and ML technology.
For the healthcare industry, the potential to impact outcomes for their patients and assist clinicians with their difficult work is very important. At the same time, the massive amount of data that an organization like Fortis Healthcare possesses must be protected at all costs: after all, it is sensitive information that ultimately belongs to the patients themselves.
“It’s challenging for us to figure out ways we can leverage the data we have to provide better care for our patient while never making unethical use of this information at any point in time,” Bhargava says. “We’d rather lose out on a particular opportunity instead of taking any of the missteps that would harm our patients or our clinicians—so the journey might be a little slow for us, but we will for sure take all of the steps that we think are right and completely ethical from the patient’s standpoint.”
