Changes for new “From SA” licenses in 2024

There will be an update to our From SA licenses policy for Microsoft 365 and its standalone products on February 1, 2024 and Dynamics 365 products on April 1, 2024.

Update March 18, 2024

The Dynamics 365 “Bridge to the Cloud 2” promotion is now available. This promotion offers eligible commercial customers with Dynamics on-premises licenses a discount during a three-year non-cancellable term when purchasing eligible Dynamics 365 subscriptions through a direct Microsoft Customer Agreement. Note the Microsoft Customer Agreement is available direct through a Microsoft seller only in certain countries.* Contact your Microsoft seller to determine which Dynamics products are eligible for the promotion.

*The Microsoft Customer Agreement is available through a Microsoft seller in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, and Uruguay.

December 15, 2023

“From Software Assurance” licenses (commonly known as “From SA”) were created eight years ago to give customers the option to deploy Microsoft User Subscription Licenses (USL) at a discounted price to enable moving from on-premises to the cloud. Cloud services are now the predominant way customers use Microsoft products and services, and to that effect, customers will not be able to order additional or new From SA licenses starting in calendar year 2024. This change won’t impact the use and renewal of existing From SA licenses.

Changes to From SA licensing terms: From SA licensing terms will be modified for Microsoft 365 and its standalone products on February 1, 2024, and for Dynamics 365 products on April 1, 2024.

  • Microsoft 365: You won’t be able to order additional or new From SA subscription licenses for Microsoft 365 and its standalone products.
  • Dynamics 365: You won’t be able to order additional or new From SA subscription licenses for Dynamics 365. To further support customers moving from on-premises to cloud, by April 1, 2024, we will introduce a promotional migration offer for the Enterprise Agreement. More information about this promotion will be disclosed in early 2024.

Renewing current From SA licenses: Licenses purchased prior to the licensing change dates will continue to be eligible for renewal in like quantities up to the number of corresponding expiring From SA USLs.

Migrating additional on-premises licenses: When your licenses expire, you can order Full USL licenses to migrate your on-premises licenses. For Microsoft 365, there will be a provision to allow Office Professional Plus use rights in some circumstances for customers who migrate to the Full USL after February 1, 2024. You can find this policy update in the February 1, 2024 Product Terms. For Dynamics 365, enterprise customers can take advantage of the time-limited migration offer (available on or before April 1, 2024).
