Creating safer communities with Windows 10

It’s been said that innovation is “change that unlocks new value”—and that’s exactly what Windows 10 does for public safety organizations. Microsoft has been working to design a complete set of solutions that help public safety organizations fulfill their missions of protecting citizens, and Windows 10 takes this ability to the next level by delivering the best Windows ever.

Delivered as a service that’s kept automatically up-to-date with innovations and security enhancements, Windows 10 offers public safety organizations a secure, familiar operating system that helps create safer communities. Moreover, Windows 10 works beautifully from screen to screen, allowing public safety workers to move between different devices as their work dictates, while still achieving the highest level of productivity.

So how exactly can Windows 10 help the public safety sector unlock new value? Consider the following examples:

Collaborating across command centers: Using Windows 10 and Microsoft Surface Hub, public safety organizations can collaborate far more effectively than in the past—whether everyone’s in the same room or thousands of miles apart. Imagine a police headquarters that wants to strategically allocate its limited staff, for example. Using Power BI on Windows 10, police commanders can predict where crimes are likely to occur by area and time of day, drill down into this information by clicking different areas of a map displayed on Surface Hub, and then allocate limited resources to trouble areas to reduce the likelihood of criminal activity.

Using Windows 10 and Surface Hub, law enforcement officials can also share content on an interactive whiteboard, communicating critical information to police precincts and working collaboratively to quickly develop crime-solving strategies. Whether it’s fighting crime, responding to a natural disaster, or monitoring prison inmates, Windows 10 and Surface Hub represent a significant contribution to public safety and justice organizations.

Keeping police officers on the street: As I talk to first responders around the world, they repeatedly tell me they want to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time on the street. A police officer doesn’t want to arrest someone and then spend the next four hours driving them to the police station, waiting in line, booking them through a paper-based system, and finally having their suspect released or detained.

Using Windows 10 on mobile devices connected to the cloud, police officers can now accomplish a lot more right at the scene. Take an incident such as public intoxication or reckless driving, for example. Using Windows 10 technologies such as fingerprint reading, facial recognition, and iris scanning, police officers can rapidly identify the suspect. And they can build a case file without ever having to drive to the police station. With the case file opened right at the scene, the suspect can now be tracked all the way through the system from the time of the arrest through the investigation and trial to incarceration, parole, and release. And because the Windows 10 core is built on a Universal Windows Platform (UWP), any application developed for one device will render properly on other devices with little to no adjustment, saving jurisdictions the time and money of tailoring applications for different devices.

Equipping patrol officers with the information they need: Today, patrol officers spend valuable time tied up in their cars, often searching for information by clicking between windows on their laptops. To address this issue, Microsoft and its partners have developed a groundbreaking new patrol car model called the Microsoft Advanced Patrol Platform (MAPP) that equips police officers with all the information they need.

MAPP consolidates dispatch information, driving directions, suspect history, a voice- activated license plate reader, a missing persons list, location-based crime bulletins and statistics, a feed of shift reports, and more—presenting all of this information in an elegant application portal on a Windows 10 tablet. With all of this information at their fingertips, police officers will be far better equipped to fight crime.

These are just a few of the ways in which Windows 10 is poised to improve public safety. Windows 10 truly unlocks new value, allowing public safety officials to create far safer communities that those of the past.
