How to improve your social skills and build confidence with AI

We all have our social slipups from time to time, and that’s ok. Learn how to improve your social skills to build more fulfilling relationships with others using AI.

Voice chat to help overcome social anxiety

Many conversational AI tools offer voice chat with a human-like voice. Try using that to simulate human interactions. With AI, you can chat about whatever, whenever. No, AI is not human, but practicing conversation with human-like voice can help you acclimate to real-life conversations and build social confidence.

Customize your bot’s personality by specifying traits, relationship type, and conversation topics. Practice anything from a job interview to a casual conversation with your crush. The more you interact with your AI tool, the more it adapts to your preferences to fit the right mold.

Build social confidence through exercises

If you feel uneasy in social situations, try AI exercise ideas to boost your confidence. Learn ways to practice different social skills, like eye contact, body-language awareness, active listening, and small talk.

Use a simple prompt like one of these:

  • I want to be less awkward. What exercises can I do to build confidence and overcome social anxiety?
  • Give me exercises to practice conversations topics for socializing.

Master the art of replying to texts

Ever get a text message you don’t know how to respond to? In the pre-AI world, a lot of us “forget” to reply to these messages—not out of ill intent or anything—but finding the right words can be difficult. If you’re trying to keep a conversation alive, turn to generative AI for response advice or to ask for conversation topics.

Provide context about the conversation, who you’re talking to, what your relationship is, and the text you’re having trouble responding to, like with this prompt:

  • I am texting about books with this guy I really like. We met recently at a concert and exchanged numbers. Our conversation over text has been going well, but now I’m stuck on how to respond to his last message, “Oh nice, I like Crime and Punishment too.” What can I say to keep the conversation going and to move on from books?
“No, AI is not human, but practicing conversation with human-like voice chat can help you acclimate to real-life conversations and build social confidence.”

Analyze and resolve conflict

Whenever conflict arises, you may feel like shutting down. Thankfully, AI can help us analyze these situations, learn from them, and respond tactfully. Give your AI tool the context of the situation including the parties involved, who said what, how both parties reacted, and what went wrong. You might try a prompt like this for new insights:

  • My girlfriend and I got into a fight over picking a restaurant. When she asked me what I wanted to do, I responded that I was “fine with whatever.” For some reason, this made her upset. “Why do you make these things so difficult?” she replied. “I don’t know. I just don’t have a preference,” I said with a shrug. She hopped into her car and drove off somewhere, and now she won’t pick up my calls. I feel like I did nothing wrong. Why do you think she’s upset? What can I do to make things right?

Role-play real-life social scenarios

Prepare for real-world social situations by role-playing scenarios with AI. Start by prompting generative AI with the necessary details, like your relationship with the other party, the setting, the emotions involved, and the issue. Maybe you work in customer service and have a hard time dealing with unhappy customers or you want to gain the courage to finally ask that person out.

Let’s say you’re a barista at a coffee shop, where many (unpleasant) customer reactions are possible. Ask a prompt like this:

  • Let’s act out a social scenario. I’m a barista at a coffee shop, and you’re a pompous customer who is visibly and audibly upset at the service. Confront me over your order.

When you use AI to practice social skills and gain relationship insight, you can build more social and relational confidence. Find out other ways AI fosters personal development with these everyday AI tips and tricks.
