Using ChatGPT for source citation

Make sure that the information you reference in your writing is both accurate and properly sourced. AI can help with this, but it has limitations. Learn what ChatGPT can (and can’t) do when it comes to citations.

Can ChatGPT cite its own sources?

If you’re using AI like ChatGPT for research or to put together information, you may be wondering where the information comes from. ChatGPT is aware of information that was available up until 2021 and has been fed a huge variety of texts about every subject imaginable. If you prompt it to create content for you, it’s important to keep in mind that the information it gives you may not always be entirely accurate or reliable.

If you ask ChatGPT to cite its sources and verify the claims in the content it has produced, you’ll need to be very specific when phrasing your prompt, and you’ll need to double check any sources claimed by the AI. If you prompt ChatGPT to add sources without telling it what information to cite, it may create plausible-looking citations for sources that don’t exist.

ChatGPT will make attempts to provide sources for its content, but its primary function is to reproduce patterns in text, not to actively consult sources to provide accurate information. While it has a wealth of data, it can’t actively search the Internet to verify its claims, which means that generated citations may not be accurate.

“An important thing to remember when writing any kind of research-based document is that ChatGPT isn’t a search engine.”

Before relying on any information that’s generated by ChatGPT, make sure that you know how to conduct research on your own to ensure that information is correct. One way to do this is to use Researcher in Microsoft Word to find reliable sources and add accurate content to your writing. Not only can it help you find information you’re looking for, but it can also help you cite them accurately in your document.

An important thing to remember when writing any kind of research-based document is that ChatGPT isn’t a search engine. It exists to generate contextual information and it’s up to you to double check it for accuracy.

Using AI to create a bibliography

If the idea of creating a bibliography for your document makes you anxious, you may feel more comfortable asking ChatGPT to create one for you. You’ll need to enter all the relevant information about your sources and specify what kind of citation style to use. But if you’re going to all that trouble to enter correct information, it might be easier to write a bibliography and create citations yourself.

Thankfully, Microsoft Word makes it easy to create a bibliography and accurately add citations to your references.

In the References tab in Microsoft Word, look at the Citations & Bibliography group of options. From here you have the option to choose what style you’d like to use. Enter the information for your source and choose the type of media it is, and Word will create an accurate citation, as well as help you keep track of all the sources you’ve used.

There are three main citation styles, and it’s helpful to understand the differences between them so that you can keep your list of sources clear and consistent.

AI like ChatGPT is an incredible tool, especially when it comes to writing, but it should be used carefully and checked for accuracy. It’s important to remember that it isn’t a search engine and that the content it produces mimics writing patterns rather than being entirely factual. Knowing how to conduct accurate research and cite your sources will have a greater payoff in the long run.
